GTD Insurance

I think this is the right forum to post in. I am looking at buying a VW Gold GTD. I've pretty much made up my mind on the car becuase of the cheap tax and considering it's diesel and powerful enough. Im 21, have 3 years no claims on my own policy, and one on the parents. I went to quinn and insure.ie yesterday and they quoted me €2,400 fully comprehensive.

I am currently with nononsense, I rang them up to see what the story is. I currently have a 2010 Golf, 1.2 105bhp, my insureance is 1100 which isn't bad considering the other quotes I was getting at the time. if I was to change to this car I would have to pay €77 till the end of August. If I put in all my details on the website it will not give me a quote because the car is classed at a performance car. My main question is if it pay the €77 will they have to issue me with a renewal qoute? Can anyone suggest anywhere else I could try for insurance?

They'll issue you a renewal quote. But if they don't want to insure you, they'll just issue a ridiculous renewal quote.

That's what I am weary of. I don't fancy forking out that type of money for insurance.

€77 from now to end of August is roughly €900/annum, so your existing crowd are €2000ish to insure you on it for a year. If you don't fancy paying that and can't get a cheaper quote than don't buy it.

I just checked it on the FBD site and thI don't think I could ask for much better than that considering I have four penalty points :(. Thanks for your help guys!

I have the same car, collected it 10 days ago. I had an 07 GTI before this and the insurance on that was about €550. I needed to cough up another €125 when I was doing the permanent insurance transfer, which I was surprised at... but that was due to the higher value of the new car. I am over 30 by the way!

TBH, you don't want to hear this, but you're too young to be insuring a car like this and clearly the insurance companies think so too. And the 4 peno points doesn't help your cause either!

I paid over £2,000 (punts!) to insure a 1.6 Ford Focus 12 years ago :D

The GTD is a cracking car though, so I commend your good taste anyway :) If I were in your position I'd probably want the nice wheels too, Ive been there and bought the t-shirt, but you have to weigh up the insurance and other running costs.

Well yeah thats the thing. I just wanted something with a bit more power. I've always wanted a gti, but the tax and insureance not to mention petrol wouldn't be worth it. I'd be working for the car. What is the gtd like with regards diesel?

It's early days, with only being a week old, but so far I'm very impressed. I would have barely gotten 28mpg in the GTI with typical usage (to and from work, in and around town) and maybe 33-35mpg on a long journey.

The GTD is so far averaging about 43mpg on the short hops and I took it for a nice spin on sunday and it did 55mpg on that!

Also... road tax is €156. It was over €600 on the GTI.

That's pretty decent alright. I must check out what the average is for my car and compare. I'd say you are finding a difference on the price of fuel compared to your gti.

Massive difference. I have 440kms on the trip meter this morning since the last fill up... and the needle is just below the half-way mark. It would have been approaching the "refuel-soon" warning at this point in the GTI.

That said, the new car obviously cost me a fair wedge to upgrade to, so I'm only kidding myself If I claim the change has saved me money... I'm confident I'll see my money back in 25 years :pac:

Ha, I was quoted €18,500 with my own. The gtd had the rear and front parking sensors, paralel park, bluetooth, anti dazzle mirror and auto wipers and headlights. Wasn't too bad considering how much driving I do.

Only in Ireland would a 168bhp diesel be considered a performance car

Spend that much money to save a few quid on diesel?I never get that.Go spend 14/15k on a nice GTi and spend the remainder on insurance and go go juice :D

See thats the thing, I prefer the GTD over the GTI. I am planning on keeping the car for a few years and eventually the price of fuel would catch up if I had the GTI. Ah well I've been talked out of it now. Probably for the best.

    Why?

Financially an older GTi makes more sense, will have taken most of its depreciation hit already and will be a better more fun car.

If your having to put 18k along with a 2010 Golf to buy a GTD you'd want to be driving a GTi for about 30 years for fuel costs to catch up with you!

Also, the diesel will have some expensive failure at some stage although the CR engine is more reliable than the older PD.

But from a drivability point of view the petrol kicks the diesels backside.

Is the GTD you're looking at used / ex-demo?

The bluetooth is a great feature, glad I got that myself.
