I purchased the iPad2 with the hope that I would be able to download loads of movies/boxsets etc onto it for flights/travelling/kids.

Can anyone tell me the best way to do this without using iTunes or even if there is a way. Im sure someone told me there was but I cant remember it

Mac the Ripper is good for burning you files to your computer.

Then use VLC to play the files on your iPad.

    www.handbrake.fr
this will rip your dvd's directly in to format playable on ipad.
save them in itunes and just sync

Vlc player is o longer available on AppStore anymore. I use oplayer hd and it's the best I've come across. They have a free version with ads that you can try out. Paid app is about €4, but well worth it. It plays .avi. .mkv although max resolution I got was 720 without lag
I'm big on using my iPad for movies and also use www.veetle.com, it's a site that streams movie/ tv shows and always something to watch

+1 for oplayer, a great app and well worth the €4. Once you get the hang of adding in the movies its a breeze!
