I have just enquired about pulling a large trailer and was told even though I have a full license for over 10 yrs I have to have a driving test. They couldnt tell me what it involves so I thought I would ask here before I make another load of phone calls with people not being able to give me much guidence.

You have to do a test for large trailers, but your normal B category license covers you to drive trailers up to a certain weight.

if u have a full license u can pull a single axle trailor, for a double axle trailor and so on u must have a license for that but heres the catch u must do a theory test first and then do the test at test center and for the theory test i think the waiting list is six months and even if u pass u start off on a provisional liense on trailor any garda would know the full details for u

B licence can pull a max of 750kg, anymore you have to get an EB licence.

Ssme rules for rigids, you can only pull 750kg with a C, anymore and you have to get EC

Doesn't matter how many axles it has it's all to do with the DGVW of the trailer. And never believe a Garda they'll tell you need a 4x4 to tow.

I was going to call you on this and dig into the Irish Statue book for proof as the ROTR aren't law. But they seem to have changed the Statue book and now it's 750kg DGVW for trailers, this could lead to a lot of insurance issues for people.
    B

Vehicles (other than motorcycles, mopeds, work vehicles or land tractors) having a design gross vehicle weight not exceeding 3,500 kg., and having passenger accommodation for not more than 8 persons and where the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer is not greater than 750kg

I done the EB test a few months ago, I have had B (car) licence for 10+ years.

Process invloved applying for theory test and passing it! Then going to local motor tax office and getting provisional EB licence, waiting 6 months from date of issue of provisional licence before being able to sit driving test (HAVE to wait the 6 months... no fast-tracking because needed for work or anything). I applied after 5 months as there was approx a 2 month waiting list for tests in my area.

I done three lessons, I would recommend them as it is a bit different from car test, same idea but need to take slightly different approach to roundabouts etc, and helps with identifying bad habits! Make sure instructor has experience with EB test requirements. I had my own vehicle and trailer, a 4x4 and car transporter (trailer has to be over a certain size and there are certain conditions on towing vehicle, 4x4 or rear wheel drive, if FWD has to be at least 14ft long i think it was) and if towing vehicle is newer than 2004 the trailer has to have high sides, like a horse box trailer or something.

The test was ok, I was asked about how to hook on and off a trailer, and then just a few other rules of the road. I was given the choice of reversing around a left or right hand corner. Rest of the test was same as car, without turnabout, but does have hill start etc.

I was also advised when i came out of the test centre to start the test to take a quick check of the hitch, as the vehicle had been left unattended, dont know if its a requirement but I done it anyway.

    Hope that helps!
