I did the same thing. I swapped my 3GS with someone on Adverts who had a spotless HTC Desire. The iPhone is better someways especially with responsiveness of the touchscreen and the camera but I think the Desire is better in every other way and you can't beat the lack of restrictions in what you are allowed to do.

Have a look at the Samsung Galaxy S2, available from all the networks now. This is the current Android top phone.

Got one two weeks ago, and couldn't be happier...

I have a HTC Desire and couldn't fault it. I'm sure there is bigger and better out there but I haven't used them so cant recommend anything else.

Ya would second the HTC Desire
But maybe HTC Desire S is a better option now
If you were to go Meteor for example you get

€40 per month over 18 months with 400 mins, 400 texts and 2 GB data and the phone is €119.99

Thats about the same price as I got the Desire for last year. Its cheaper than some of the other high end phones and is probably a good starting point for an Android newbie (I do see Meteor is giving the iPhone 4 free on all Bill Pay plans, monthly fees are a little more expensive, so maybe that would be a factor for you too - however it is an iPhone:( )
This one has beefed up specs and extra internal memory for more apps, runs Gingerbread (Android 2.3) has a front facing camera, runs HTC Sense (which is a breeze to use) and is a similar size to iPhone. I found some of the bigger phones too big to fit in to a pocket and a bit bulky so I am going to try to stick to the 3.5/3.7 inch sizes going forward

If anyone has any hands on review or experience of the Desire S please post your thoughts too.

Yes Desire and Desire S are perfect size in my view. If I want something bigger I would probably start looking at a tablet - it is after all only a phone and some of the 4.3 or 4.5 inch screens are crazy big to be putting up to your ear!

or an Incredible S. I have one and I like it a lot. The screen is bigger without the phone becoming unwieldy.

Personally, I would check the fit in a phone shop first and get whichever feels more comfortable.
