YLOD Official Sony refurb reliability

My mate had a go at the YLOD repair for me last night, came back on briefly, at least I got MW2 out, he's going to try it again this week, but, I know at best it's only a temp fix.

Is it possible to buy a new mainboard anywhere on-line?

I rang Sony yesterday and they said they will still offer the refurb/€160 replacement even it there has been a repair attempt on it. I got him to assure me over the phone, hopefully he wasn't spoofing.

What is the resale value of a refurbed PS3 from Sony, if I were to sell it and buy a slim?

Seems to be loads of YLOD's for sale on Adverts, not too many functioning ones so its hard to gauge the resale value.

Is the refurb from Sony as likely to re-fail as a fixed one from Console repairs, or do they actually use new mainboards inside used chassis?

Has anyone here had a 60Gb phat refurb from Sony fail on them? Or are they all still going strong?

No such thing as refurbs any more, you hand in your 60gb machine and 160 and you'll get a PS3 slim returned, or so I am told by Gamestop, so bye bye backwards compatibility. :(

You should try console repairs Ireland for €60 he fixed mine now about 2 months ago and I've been battering it ever since.

    LA Noire
    Crysis 2
    Media server

He told me it will probably only last a year or two max. But sure that's better than shelling out and losing your backwards compatibility.

I kept my old slim ps2 to play ps1+2 games should i want.

And my fat ps3 80gb has never given problems in three years

I spoke at length to Sony on Monday about this, they said that they send re manufactured phat PS3's to anyone availing of the refurb service. I was requesting a slim in exchange and he emphatically said it couldn't be done.

I know others use the backwards compatibility, I don't so a slim would be fine for me.

I don't want to shell out €160 and have the same issue arise.

The guy in Smyths I spoke to said that they don't re manufacture them any more, they send out new ones but the Sony dude denied that.

Mr Sony also said that if I send it off to get repaired by a 3rd party I can still avail of the refurb offer if it fails again, I asked him was he certain that if the warranty seal was removed I could send it in and he said yes, I could still send it in for a re-manufactured one.

So I have my mate trying the reflow and if that fails I'll get a refurb, sell it and get a slim.

According to Sony, there actually isn't an issue so their 'repair' will likely last as long as a piece of string. A 3rd party reball with leaded solder is the best case scenario.

I've had 6 refurbs in just over two years.

First one had a disc drive problem the day I collected it.

Second developed a problem after 7 months and wouldn't recognise discs. This started of as an intermittent fault, if a disc was left in the drive overnight it wouldn't show up on the XMB next time the console was turned on. By ejecting then putting it back in worked but about a month later packed up altogether.

Third one would shut down after about 20 mins of use.

Fourth one got YLOD after 14 months

Fifth was similar to the third except it would go about forty mins.

    Six seems ok so far.

    1-4 were 60GB with backwards compatibility, 5 and 6 120GB slim.

Well, I have to crack the thing open to recover a game, the eject trick doesn't work.
Then I'll put the thing in storage til I can afford the refurb and just use it as a bluray player. I already sent it off for repair and the guy didn't even open it.
