I have a new (used) car. It's a Mazda and apparently has a timing chain as opposed to a belt. 60K kms on the clock.

Does a chain have to be changed in the same interval as a belt would - 80K kms, for example?

    Short answer - no.
Is it making any noise? Sometime the tensioners needs adjusting.

I changed the chain on my old 325tds at 195,000 miles and it was still in pretty good nick.

    So no is your answer.

A timing chain will outlive the engine without any difficulty provided that servicing is carried out at the recommended intervals.

Excellent. Thanks. No current issues with the chain. I had the car inspected thoroughly and it's getting a service today.

    Now I know. Cheers.
