I gave a car dealership a cash deposit but now that I want a refund they insist on giving me a cheque. I asked if they can credit my laser card so I can get the cash from an ATM but they said no. WTF? Is this usual? I mean, I gave cash why can't I have my cash back????

Because businesses generally refund large sums of money in cheque form, or EFT.

TBH, you're lucky to get a refund at all, deposits are generally non-refundable, so I'd happily take the cheque and stay hush ;)

I don't see an issue provided the cheque is good?

You can insist on cash if you want but it's probably easier to spend the time you'll spend arguing with them to take a cheque from them and cash it at their bank branch.

Ensure they don't cross the cheque, that it's made payable to you and not cash, and that you have photo I.D. in the form of a passport or driving license when you go to the bank.

I spent ages arguing with them about getting the cash back but they weren't budging. The receipt for the cash stated that I'd get a full refund if a car wasn't sourced and that's what happened BUT I believe that if I gave them cash they should return cash! I need the cash not a cheque because I'm buying another car TODAY but I'm at work so don't have the option of going to their bank and getting it cashed. IMO it should have been made clear that a cash deposit would be refunded in cheque format.

Well that's a pain in the arse but a lot of businesses just don't operate with large cash floats. Simple as that.

Why don't you pay for the cheque to be picked up and dropped over to you now, and you can go cash it at lunchtime? Taxi, courier etc will usually work out fine for this sort of thing.

I KNOW it's an inconvenience but do you want to complain about it or find a solution?

AFAIK dealers don't like refunding people by cheque if the money is received in cash. The reason for this is that they can be accused, to an extent, of money laundering if, worst case scenario, the money turns out to be duds or hot.

    Good for you.

Cheques are not legal tender and you have no reason to accept them if you don't want.
