Golf tdi engine light

    My golf tdi mk5 has an engine light "emissions workshop" . I brought it to a local garage, they ran a diagnostic test and said that it was the air intake motor which was faulty. They changed the motor but the fault came back after a few hours. They also checked all the wiring and said that it was fine. They now say that the ecu may be at faullt. Although the car is running fine I would like to sort it. Any suggestions would be welcome.

    I had that exact same problem with my mk4 1.6 Golf. When I bought the car, which was second hand, and the "Workshope Emissions" message kept on coming on all the time, and sometimes at traffic lights the car got a bit juddery when moving off. Eventually the problem got worse, that the car wouldn't start up all. My next door neighbours son fixed it for me, and he found out that it was the ecu/engine management system that was causing the problem.

    Maybe it was knackered or something, but that was back in earlysih December, and my car is going really really great since, and it's more economical and a little bit more powerful as well because all four cylinders are working, whereas when the ecu/engine management system was down only three cylinders where working. I reckon thats your problem. I hope this helps you.;)

    It was €400 in total, and a new battery as well. Initially my next door neighbour who is a mechanic, thought I would have to get the engine reconditioned, which would have cost around €1,500, but thankfully it didn't even cost next or near that amount. My car starts up all the time everytime now, and it is also a very reliable car as well. The one downside was I was without my car for a week, but in the long run it was well well worth it. I hope it won't cost you too much.

    I know of a few mk4 golfs that needed new ecu's. Maybe it spread tot he mk5'?

    Did you get a copy of the diagnostic report?

    No I didn't get the report, just remember it saying that there was " loss of signal to motor for intake flap" Can't remember the error code.

    I'd get a second opinion on it myself. It could be anything from a faulty coil pack to a dodgy battery. Second opinion is best option.
