Because the pay is mighty and once they've been in the job a number of years the conditions are pretty decent too. Plenty of people in crappy low-paid jobs have to work unsocial hours with little job security. Yes, the early years of being a doctor are tough, but christ it pays off in the long term more than any other job with similar training requirements. They are grossly overpaid compared to their European counterparts - if they want better conditions they just have to suck up lower pay. Consultants are leading on that, protecting their own backs at the expense of the junior doctors.
