Malt Syrup - where to buy?

I have been investigating earthy brews lately, and I want a more beer-like consistency, without necessarily going the whole beer brewing route.

Some recipes that I have seen call for 'Malt Syrup' which seems to be a sugar derived from wheat.

Where can you get this? Is Malt Extract similar, or a suitable substitute? I can get Malt Extract in local health food stores (Galway) and I haven't checked all the boutique food stores yet, but I would like to try out the particular recipe in mind.
