Rugby or American football?

Does anybody else think that the modern day rugby is getting more and more like American Football. It seem to be all heads down and charge! All the players seem to be "heavy weights".

When I played - many, many years ago, there were positions for the smaller player, the agile player. Hooker and scrum half for example. Then the wings were usually not that heavy but were fast runners.

To me, all this seems to have gone by the wayside and the heavy weights have taken over.

    i odnt think so.

in darcy and bod we must have the smallest centre partnership in international rugby. earls and luke fitz arent that much bigger either.

new zealand have conrad smith, andrew hore, keven mealamu and cory jane who wouldnt be known for their power plays.

the australian half backs genia and cooper arent that big either.

the players would do alot of weights as they are pro so would be pretty well built but i still think there is room for the smaller guys out there.

Super rugby has similarities. With it's family fun club names, hot cheerleaders, funny celebrations and laid back commentators.

But I don't think so. The players are getting stronger and better conditioned, but there will always be a place for the small, tall and rotund.

Is it just a consequence of the professional game? These days, guys can spend all day every day getting big, but staying fast. The science behind strength & conditioning and plyometrics etc. has come along way in the last few years. Cian Healy for instance had some great runs up the pitch last season, I don't remember props doing that 10 years ago!
