    Hi

I'm looking for some help. I need a car, I would like to spend less than 1000e and looking online there are thousands of cars available around that price range - I'm searching for less than 2k as I figure some people will have priced high to haggle.

What I need is a car that is cheap to run and insure, I know that what I'm spending wont get me a lot but i'd like something nice as possible!

Finally, I need some space in it. I have 3 dogs who travel with me occasionally, usually to and from the sea so it would be nice to have a big boot for them! I dont have a lot of time online to search so some help in narrowing down the choices would be great!

    Thanks

    Engrish?

    Thanks. I'm reconsidering my max 1k as the choice is pretty bad. There seems to be a few of these;

Are they any good? Also, I previously owned a 97 mercedes and liked it, I was very lucky that nothing ever went wrong with it but I have heard that they are very expensive to maintain. Would this car be a bad choice? The insurance is pretty cheap for me, dont know about the general costs...

    Thanks a mil

If you are searching in and around 1k drag the years on the cars back to around 2005, this should get rid of most of the poa.

Slightly o/t but whenever I see poa I just skip over the add, even if I might have been interested in the car.

I doubt you'd get the Honda CRV for under the grand. 30mpg ish and 2L tax would put most people off these days but I still think that fella won't come down much on that. OK, sorry - you've brought the budget up a bit. A good one should be very reliable. Cheaper than other SUV vehicles to run probably (pretty sure this was a design consideration for Honda when they developed them) but a large hatchback car or small estate might be a cheaper option.

How big a deal is tax? IE whats the max engine size? How big are the dogs? Are they young and fit or getting on a bit (the boot of the CRV would be quite high for an old dog to get into I'd say!).

Will this car be used pretty much for carrying you on your own or you and the dogs, or will it need to carry 4 people regularly or occasionally?

The tax on the CRV is €600 which would be the max I'd go so a 2 litre car. EDIT/ But I'd like to go as small engine size as possible The dogs are big, three big labrador types. I doubt we would have many people in the car but it would be nice to have the back seats to keep the shopping or whatever away from the dogs!

The dogs are all young so the height of the boot doesnt matter too much. I used to have a Navara which I would lift my older dog into before she died.

I just noticed this edit. yeah, I suppose I'm the champagne taste on a beer budget. I dont care that much about the car but I want something that wont make me shudder when I look at it. Most of the cars (and the van) in the first response made me shudder (although thanks for the help!)

I suppose when it comes down to it I want something that doesnt look or drive like a piece of crap and that is cheap and cheap to run. Is that so much to ask? :pac:

A Ford Focus estate is probably a good bet. 1.4 engine. Will be slow but should be cheap motoring in every way. About the cheapest small estate readily available.

Hmmm, this is a bit "hate it or meh, I could live with it"- but a Mazda Premacy would be a handy bus for 3 big dogs. 5 seater with all seats in, big enough boot. But the 3 rear seats are all independent and can be folded or removed (very easily!) individually. This gives you loads of space in the back. Smallest engine is 1.8 tho. It's a Mazda 626 engine, I've noticed a few of the premacys being sold as "engine smokey when cold". This is (most likely) an valve seal problem that also affected some of the 626's. Look for blue-ish smoke on start up if the car has been sitting up overnight.

+1, Astra 1.7 diesel estate too might be worth a look.

I dont mind the look of the Ford Focus Estate actually. I'd look like an old man but hey, 1.4l will be cheap as chips to run. Will add that to the search!

Sorry for jumping in on your thread OP but I was thinking of getting a similar kind of car to yourself;)

I've a limit of 2k and was thinking of going for a:

Golf estate (preferably diesel but will prob settle for the cheaper 1.4 petrol model)

Astra estate (same as above, preferably diesel)

Corrolla hatch/lift back (the cheapest of the three, not much of a looker but should be reliable enough and even the 1.9 diesel are within my budget)

Any thoughts guys - pro's or con's on the above?

    Cheers:pac:
