Questions For AH'ers Going To Oxegen

Never been - is it worth it? A couple of my friends have gone regularly and say that now, being older and "wiser", they're fed up with sleeping in cramped tents and being knee high in shit and piss. Enter, green area luxury accommodation. Is anyone familiar with this area? And more importantly, is there a lot of gowl on the prowl?

Never been to the Green Site, so can't comment on that.

But Oxegen itself is deadly, such a good atmosphere around the place. I say go for it.

I went once and never again.

There's nothing to do until 2pm, it's full of scummers, 90% of the music is shit, the food is shit, people stand on your head when you're trying to sleep, you have to walk like 8 miles from the campsite to the concert area, tents get burned out, slashed, robbed and pissed on, people get stabbed, and everything is ridiculously overpriced. Plus when you're there nobody washes, do you really want to ride some girl who hasn't washed in 3 days?

Having said that, I don't get drunk. And by God did I try at Oxegen. It's probably deadly if you're locked the entire time.

How is the drink set up? Do you have to bring your own? I heard they stopped it but don't know if thats true. Either way, the pints there are too pricey for an event like this. You'd think they'd have sponsors and promotions at something like this. But then again, it is ireland.

I can't wait for boardsies to describe the antics they saw there when they return.

It is what you make of it. If you're over college going age though, I would avoid. Lot of drunken idiots off their faces pulling stupid stunts. Have seen a fair bit of aggressive behaviour and you'll always see people doing idiotic things like p*ssing on other people's stuff/tents or, for the more adventurous, trying to set fire to piles of rubbish in the middle of tents. For the most part people are in great form but there's a significant element who just go to booze and act the maggot. You'll see people who are there just to drink. Some never get clear of the campsite and don't see any acts.

You could go abroad for 4 days to a good European city for what you'll spend on Oxegen and you'll avoid pneumonia and the traffic. Hindsight is a great thing.

Never been but the number of my mates that have been going has dwindled over the years. In fact don't know anyone going this year. All i've heard is complaints after it. Been to a few festivals around Europe and my experience sounds way better than what i heard of Oxegen.

Oxygen is a **** fest mate, much better ones will be on in the country over the summer.

I went to it when it started out as witness festival. Had press passes so spent most of the time in the press bar getting discounted drink prices which meant I had to stay close to the proper indoor toilets. I met David Grey. Wouldn't have any interest standing around in a mucky puddle these days though.

dont know about last year. the year before you could bring your own drink and unless you are a sheikh you wont be able to get locked when pints are €6

heineken are the Main sponsor but they've paid a fortune to have the near monopoly on drink so know promotions

I went last year. It was a good experience aside from the.... Ummm.... Basically there was this chick squatted over a bottle pissing in the middle of a large crowd. It was running down the bottle and just all over herself... Something I never want to see again.

Needless to stay I'm going again this year, camping this time

Whether or not you'll enjoy it depends on your age, your tolerance for idiots (which generally has an inverse relationship with your age), and your luck - most people won't encounter any serious trouble but it happens.

I've been to Oxegen 4 times, and enjoyed it on each occasion. I went last year at the age of 22 and, whilst I had a great laugh, I realised I'm over it now and I'll be hanging up my wellies in that regard. It's prohibitively expenseive and not only are there better, cheaper festivals in Europe. there are better and cheaper festivals in Ireland.

I also predict a hitherto unmatched presence of scumbags at this year's festival. The unholy trinity of Beyonce, The Script and Black Eyed Peas just looks like the biggest magnet for wreckhead morons I've ever seen.

I imagine a lot of kids conceived at Oxygen are gonna be called Beyonce.

Why? The MCD ban was been gone for years.

its almost guaranteed to be freezing cold, wet and muddy so i don't know why anybody would want to camp out in that, my friend went a few years ago and said it was nearly impossible trying to sleep at night with people falling over your tent at night drunk, trying to knock down/piss on/set alight your tent

i was over at the download festival last summer, booked a nice hotel in nottingham and got the bus to and from the festival every day, i sure was glad of that hot shower and room come the sunday evening when i was waisthigh in mud

I would agree with most of this. I stayed in the Green area in a garden shed which they described as some kind of cool pod. I also had VIP bar passes and even with both of these "luxuries" I still found the place to be one big toliet.

But the green area is 100 times better then the general areas, food is better, toilets are not phone boxes and the showers were reasonable all things considered.

Nah, since the recession hit and people's money:sense ratio became more balanced, Oxegen stopped selling out in 10 minutes (or at all). MCD seem to have adopted the any publicity is good publicity philosophy, and retracted their blanket censorship of any discussion of their events in Irish media.

OP you make the experience good or bad yourself, I went two years ago after my leaving cert, I had a good experience myself, got drunk and listened to some good music, went out of my way to be nice to people just because I knew alot of people head to oxegen with the fear of meeting scum and assholes. Yes the place is full of scumbags and seventeen year olds pissing on tents, passed out women and men on drugs, not a nice sight. Go with a good bunch of friends and you'll have a blast. If I were you and had the money I would head to an English festival or European, better chance of good weather and less likey chance of getting robbed or stabbed :). Btw oxegen is a great experience and I had a great time, but I've had alot of friends who had bad experiences, dont lets this post put you off going :D
