Rent allowance

I wonder could anybody help me, i'm about to view a rental house for which I will be getting rent allowance. I have never been eligible for rent allowance before, and so i'm not familiar with the scheme. I know i have to go to the community welfare officer, but do I do this before or after accepting a tenancy? Also how long does it take for your rent allowance to come through, I'm only entitled to a small amount. Any replies are appreciated!

It depends on what area your in as to weather Rent Supplement is still been issued by your CWO or the PO BOX Central Rents Units.

You should really applied for Rent Supplement before excepting any tenancy agreement as it can take sometime for your application to be processed. Plus you dont have a definite answer if you qualify for the payment or not.

I know people who where already in receipt of rent supplement and moved house and still had to wait 3 months for the new application to be processed as the new area was covered by the Central Rents unit and not the CWO.

Go down to your Local Community Welfare Officer asap and find out if you can apply to them or not

I'm in Mayo so must look into it a bit more! My lease isn't up until August so hopefully I'll have it done by then.

The Central Rents Unit doesnt yet cover Mayo, so you should appy for Rent Supplement through the CWO.....You say you think you may be entitled to a small amount! Is this because you are working? If you work more than 30hours then you will not qualify for Rent Supplement

i'm only working part time at the minute 20hrs a week as my daughter is still small, and i'm single mum so i should still qualify

as far as i know its all changed. i have to apply for the housing list and wait for that to come through before i can even think of applying for rent allowence because ive never rented before. however if you have rented in 6 out of the last months you can apply for rent allowence straight away. you're better off ringing your town/county council to be honest, some areas or situations may be different

The changes made two years ago still apply, it is resitriced to individuals who have been in homeless accommodation or renting for six months or who have been assesed as in need of housing by the local council.

If you have been renting for six months or more you must at time have been able to afford it...They may ask to provide previous tenancy agreement if you have a copy
