I had previously bought an Dell Inspiron which ended up having the worst battery ever (replaced battery three times) so would like to not repeat the same mistake.

What makes(s) would you guys recommend? Just want a mid-range reliable machine which can play HD video.

Also, is there any vendor in particular you'd recommend?

    Cheers

I saw a survey some time ago that rated Toshiba, Lenova and Asus as the most reliable. Not a techie so I don't know, but I have a Toshiba laptop and it's a cracking machine, never caused me a problem and battery life is excellent. I also have a really hi-spec Dell laptop for work which is great, but battery life is very poor, doesn't really cause a problem because its always plugged in. Would definately recommend a Toshiba, I had a HP a few years ago that died within a year, got it replaced with a new one and that also died just out of warrenty, will never buy one again.

Cheers, will probably go for one of the three you mentioned.

Is it possible that I could get such a machine at best price (or close to it) in a bricks and mortar shop as opposed to online?

I normally don't mind buying online but the thoughts of having to return it in the case of something going wrong really doesn't appeal.

www.saveonlaptops.co.uk seems to be very popular and they appear to provide a good service. Some great prices on laptops, http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_G570_1072019.html

well under €500 delivered for a lappie with all the features you'll ever need, you can get the same model with dedicated graphics for a little extra.

12 month warrenty direct with Lenova so no fear of buying online. Lots of other similar machines on there too.
