Broken Molar removal

    Hi,

I'm due to have a Molar removed soon and am a bit worried about it.

A piece of my second Molar broke off recently and I went to see a Dentist. He said the tooth was better off removed as a filling would be useless given the extent of the decay.

    I can understand that.

What worries me is the fact that the tooth itself has a large part of the side broken off and I'm wondering how the extraction will go, the root removal is what is causing me to worry.

Is it difficult/painful to have the root of a broken Molar removed?

    Thanks

OK, so seaching the net it seems this is quite a common question, and no, it's not difficult.

I'm still curious/worried about how the root will be removed without the tooth itself attached though...

    Hi OP,
it all depends on the amount of solid tooth structure above the gum, the size and shape of the roots below the gum and a few other small things...
In short, if there is enough tooth and the root looks nice and conical or there is 2 straight roots- a regular forceps extraction may be done
If not and there is a fracture or decay below the gum line or if the roots are big/bulky or off in different directions- you may need a surgical extraction where the gum is cut and pulled back from the tooth and bone, the bone drilled to free up the tooth and the roots may be cut in 2 to free them up.... This sounds terrible but if you are numb- you do not feel the cut, the drill feels the same as when getting a filling and actually removing the tooth feels like pressure....

    Good luck,
    OS

Just got that molar pulled this morning. It was a regular forceps extraction and was completely painless. Greatly relieved!
