Getting a refund from Ryanair

    Hi
Has anyone any experience in getting a refund from Ryanair? I have a booking for the family in about 2 weeks and unfortunately my mother has taken very ill and is now in the hospice expected to last no longer than 2 weeks.
Its difficult to get a clear picture form Ryanair. I have to fax them (fax?!!!) a letter but I'm just not that confident that they will respond and not sure what their repsonse will be. I hate to always expect the worst from them but at the same time...I do. Any thoughts or experiences much appreciated.

Well Ryanair do not give refunds on the ticket price.

You can apply to get the taxes and charges back but there is an admin fee that makes it not worth while.

Check your travel insurance to see if you can claim on it based on a family members illness.

Unfortunately you're not at all likely to get a refund and as Fr Tod has pointed out, you can apply for the taxes back (not the charges) subject to an admin fee, but for the life of me, I fail to see why they would want a fax from you.

The best route to follow is definitely travel insurance.

Sorry for your troubles, I'm sure it's a very stressful time without this.

    Thanks guys
Unfortunately I booked these ages ago and hadn't got round to sorting the travel insurance yet.
Ryanair do say that they will give a full refund under these circumstances but they just dont make it easy for you. Any other company would have an email adress but they want you to fax in a letter of explanation and then they will decide.

I think FR bank on not many people owning a fax machine and can't be bothered to borrow one / go to a shop to fax - so most customers just give up.

    You could try emailing.

Amazing, Kotek! Thanks for the link and some very useful email addresses!

I'll give that a try. I wouldn't know where to look for a fax machine!

    You can send faxes online

Sign up and use the free allowance

Used it myself to claim missing mileage from KLM / Air France who only accept such claims via letter or fax.

I recently got a full refund from Ryanair for a family trip. A family member passed away (2 months before flights) who was travelling with us and we got a full refund to the cent. I rang first and then sent a Fax with the death notice. I have to admit it was a very good customer experience I had with them and it was all sorted within a week.

I for one cannot understand the criticism of Ryanair. I have flown with them on 3 occasions, Flights were always on time and everything went well. Maybe the issues are when things good badly (delayed Flight etc) but I have nothing bad to say about them.

Hi firstly I am sorry to hear about your mum I send you my best wishes.
Re the fax is it possible that you or any one you know has a home printer with this facility our leximark one has and we have used it on a few occasions so it does work, might be worth asking around.

Thanks Driver, that is what I was hoping to hear and I'm glad it was a good experience. I guess they get bad press for thier charges and hard nosed approach but credit where it is due for your dealings with them. Thanks for your insight.

Just to let you know that I got a full refund from Ryanair and they were very good about it too. No problems - except the fact that they make it very hard to correspond - they only accept faxes , no phone or email.

Anyway they have gone up in my estimation!! fair play to them
