Just dropped my car into the garage this morning. Its in bad need of a service and has been feeling quite sluggish over the last month. The mechanic suspects the clutch is on the way out :( but wont be able to tell for sure until later.

Car is a 1999 Civic and im wondering if this is the case, what kind of a bill to expect?I need this like a hole in the head right now to be honest. Are there second hand parts i could source to make this any cheaper etc or would you even bother fixing it? NCT is July 2nd so would love to get another 2 years out of it if possible.

Can't see why it wouldn't be worth fixing, unless it's completely in bits and hasn't a hope if getting an nct. No point putting in second hand clutch parts, i would imagine labour will be the main cost anyway....

I think you'll only get a 1 year NCT for a '99 car now. The clutch parts - there's several civic models for 99, of 4 I checked, 3 were about e165 and 1 was about e220. There's a good bit of work in changing a clutch.

Don't let it put you off getting the clutch done (if it needs one) and the rest of the car is good. It just means you'll have to get it retested a year earlier.... (at a cost of another €50). :D

Well it was good news folks and a lot lower bill than i was expecting. The clutch was fine when they examined it and they said it was just "worn plugs" whatever that means. So for €160 they did a full service, emissions test for NCT, replaced bulb for licence plate, unblocked one window washer tube and replaced back window wiper. They said the car is mechanically sound (yay!!) but one of the back bushings (bushes??) clueless here, is a bit cracked and may or may not pass the NCT but to chance it and see.

Thought that was a very decent price from a Dublin garage for all they did. Although im a girl and clueless pretty much about cars :D
