Centrally located Dublin course that takes green fees on weekends

My brother in law is visiting in September, and is looking to play golf. Every course I check right now has competitions on every day of every weekend, so unless we are prepared to go out at 7am we wont get a game.

I am not interested in bringing him to a 9-hole course, or Leopardstown ( too flat ), he is going to be staying in Dun Laoghaire so ideally the course is within 20 minutes of that.

Heres a list of what not to suggest - I've checked them out or ruled them out already:
    Stepaside
    Leopardstown
    Carrickmines
    Killiney
    Dun Laoghaire
    Powerscourt
Courses north of Clontarf - too far

St Margarets on the M50. A little further than 20 mins, but worth the short drive.

St Margarets too far prob a 1 hour drive from DunLaoghaire - no tee times available this coming Saturday morning, but availiability on 3rd Sept, never availablity before 12 on Sunday - members have it booked. Bluefoam have you by any chance anything to do with the club?

JD, I've nothing to do with the club, in fact I live about 2000miles from there. I was just being helpful, as I lived in Dun Laoghaire & would occasionally play in Margret's among others on the Northside. However I don't like you inferring that I'm hawking on boards just because you are too lazy to travel more than 20 minutes for a decent game of golf.

Lets recap on you're requirements: you want a challenging course, with no members comps on the weekend, good value - no doubt, must be 20 minutes from your home... & any suggestions outside those parameters will be treated with contempt... Is this a correct assessment?

I can suggest a realistic solution to you query... Rent an XBox! Because you won't find someone to meet you nonsensical needs...

Bluefoam, thanks for the reply, but read the orginal post - St Margarets is not 20 minutes from Dun Laoghaire.

1916 thanks for the tip on Edmondstown - I'd given up ringing courses, because I was told 'members only' on Saturdays and Sundays by loads of them, which is why I turned to Boards.ie

So often people come on Boards.ie and answer a question thats not been asked, or give an answer thats obviously wrong, well, you wonder, that's all I'd say. Good luck with the anger management.

None of the other responses were within 20 minutes of DunLaoghaire... Nore were many in your original list. There is a reason clubs reserve weekend mornings for their members. Its because they pay a premium in order to get access during prime times.

I think you'll find Edmundstown is 20 minutes from Dun Laoghaire. I appreciate that members pay a premium for good time slots.

According to Google maps, Edmondstown is 26 minutes from DL while St Margarets is 33. Not a huge difference. I know which course I'd rather play, and I'd say that the extra 7 minutes in the car is worth it.

Edmonstown is a very nice course and you should definitely get out there at the weekend. It might be worth your while to ring the Secretary Manager of clubs that you are interested in playing. I think some might slot in green fees if there are gaps in the time sheets. My club Old Conna might have times after the competition time sheets close. I have noticed some anyway. Also, September is not quite high season. You couldn't get a more picturesque course than it - Sugar Loaf in the distance, Killiney Bay, etc. The course is challenging enough too. You really are restricting yourself by putting a time limit of 20 mins. What's an hour if you are going to spend the day enjoying yourself? Following that comment I suggest Bunclody, about an hours drive, and absolutely a delightful course.

That's the spirit...ask for advice, receive something you may deem as a bad suggestion and then have a pop at that person who is more than likely genuinely trying to help!

I came on this this willing to make a few suggestions but why bother!

I'm being a little bit Prickly here, you just said "within 20 mins" and did not specify that it was via a car. Could be done easily in a chopper!

I forgot about Castlewarden - about 20 mins from Dun Laoghaire. Lovely course and the food is very good. Mind you take exit 6 of the Naas Road, there is an exit before that that says Castlewarden but it's not for the golf club and you'll go all round the world.

Edmonstown - handy out, beside Marley Park - good course I hear, I've never played it. BTW the big rush was to get the golf booked before minds were changed. Its tricky in work to get a few hours to phone loads of courses. Brother in law and the missus are only back for the weekend so we cant spend hours driving 'round the country........:):):)
