So my friend ended up using one of the vans to attempt to bring a Reva G-Wiz back from the UK on an empty return journey from moving a customer to London. We recorded the loading and unloading anyway, I posted it on the vantasks blog and thought I'd post it here for anyone curious too. It had a little bit of trouble getting up the ramps so I'm not sure how well it can handle hill starts? Drove it a bit myself and compared to driving a van it's virtually silent!

He said there's 3,500 charging stations planned for Ireland by the end of 2011, does anyone know more about this and if they will actually be installed?

Slightly OT Cormie but could you do me a favour and drop me a PM if your doing any of those runs again? Couple of lads on a UK citroen forum I use have Xantia leather interiors for sale and I need one so I'm sure it would be mutually beneficial to have a collection on the way back (at the right price of course :-) ).

haha. I sold a seicento last year to 2 polish guys from Limerick, they drove down in a lwb highroof transit with 2 ramps and drove it straight in with an inch to spare on both sides :) Mind you they flattened the exposed wheel arches in the van lol

Snug as a bug in a ...van . Ain't quite the knightrider boarding the semi truck but interesting to see. Surprised there was room at the sides once it was in.

    3,500? I doubt there will even be 35 :)

    Edit:

Here's a map of charge points in Ireland. There are currently 6 charging points...

    Extremely badly i'd imagine....

On the subject of vans though i know that you can fit 2 (old shape) fiat pandas into one of the very large iveco daily vans.

    ^^

This reminded me of that too :D

Saw a video about it the other day, Kazakhstan I believe. The front of Mazda was right up beside the driver.

Hmm, that doesn't give a lot of confidence really. What's so special about the charging stations anyway, are they quicker than regular sockets or something? Would be a pain if there was another electric car user who just got there before you and there was only one plug!

Impressive! Would love to know was it just a few bodies who got it in or did they have any machinery to help? snug fit but I thought it's bad for cars to be on their side/upside down for too long?

Actually, since getting the one above, he also got another one aswell, so that's two extra from the UK :P He got the 2nd one with batteries which were completely dead for over a year but he brought them back to life :)

There's one on the South Mall in Cork. I parked in it last week in the Smart for 10 minutes - as it was the only one free next to the business I had to pop into. Came back out to a Gard looking at my Smart and I thought I was screwed ... turns out he thought it was Electric and asked how many miles I got on a charge.

On that map the blue ones are fast charging stations. If your car is equipped with the correct port, it will send 50 kilowatts of DC power in to your car. From experience this roughly equals 0% to 90% battery charge in about 35 minutes in a Nissan Leaf.

The green ones on the map are just regular 3 pin sockets like you have at home.

Here is the last update on the roll-out plan

There are also charging points on Irish Ferries as well, they're not listed on the map

    One of these:

    Fits into one of these:

I've done it a couple of times driving them from Germany down to Africa, snug fit but it works. :)

Haha, why do you think they are a complete joke? :) Certainly would be useless for me due to the mileage I do but for somebody who knows their exact mileage each week and could manage in one, I think it'd be a pretty good investment compared relying on public transport?

Sorry about the shaky cam :D

Thanks for that, 35 minutes isn't so bad, well compared to 8 hours anyway, but would be a pain if somebody just pulled into the charging station two minutes before you and had to wait 35 minutes to get plugged in!
