I have been diagnosed with osteoporosis of the lumbar spine. I am looking for some non-medication remedies to avoid side effects. I need to increase bone density. Any ideas welcome!

Up to you, but you could take Glucosamine, Chondroition and MSM supplements.

If you're in to taking supplements.

    Hi there,

I developed osteoporosis from longterm use of cortisone to control pain.
My consultant was reluctant to put me on osteo drugs as there have been questions raised in recent years as to the safety of using them. She also advised against the chewable calcium/vit d tablets my gp had prescribed as they have low levels of the vitamins/minerals in them and contain a lot of filler, sugar etc. Instead she put me on the following; all natural:
    - High dose vitamin D
    - A pure encapsulations calcium/magnesium powder
    - Strontium citrate (also pure e)
    - Vitamin K (also pure e)
    - Biosil natrol (info here http://www.nutritiondome.com/bsil.html)

She also recommended using a 'magneto bed'; a treatment involving pulsed magnetic fields to increase bone density. I was an in patient for 4 months so had easy access to this, I don't know how one would go about it privately though.

The up shot of all this is that my bone density was back to just below normal range at my last dexa scan. I had stopped the cortisone in the meantime which obviously helped too, but I feel all the supplements must have helped too.

    Hope this helps,
    M.

Hi Marianne, that sounds great, do you mind me asking your age? I'm 36 and diagnosed with it, too, 3.8 Is the worst score on my spine, no compression fractures yet. The reason isn't clear, I'm still waiting for an appointment. Possibles are four years of pregnancies and breastfeeding, low estrogen, high prolactin, weight loss, and maybe a genetic reason relating to the lrp5 gene. Can your vitamins and minerals be got in an Irish pharmacy, and are they expensive? I want to do something while I wait... Also not keen on the drugs!!

How high is high dose vitamin d?

    Thanks!

    Hi Clau,

I don't think my supplements can be bought in pharmacies here.
The brand my doctor recommended is Pure Encapsulations as she feels they are better quality and value than other brands. I buy them through the pharmacy at the hospital where she works (in the U.K.) but they are available online too, Amazon.co.uk for example.
They're not cheap but my osteo improved so much in 2 years between my 1st and 2nd dexa scans so I think they're worth it. I'm due my 3rd scan soon so fingers crossed I'm back in normal range again!

I'm 30, was 26 when my first dexa showed osteopenia, but as I said in my original post, I believe this was down to my poor health and all the cortisone I had to take to deal with the pain.

The dosage of Vitamin D I was on was 5000iu per day, again pure encapsulations. I didn't feel that high a dose suited me though, so now I'm on a spray which is available here; Better You Dlux 1000. Which is 1000iu daily delivered in 1 spray per day.

Hope all this helps and you are able to reverse the osteo too!

    M.

    Hi Marianne
This thread was some years back but wondering how you got on with the natural treatments for your osteoporosis.
Was also wondering where you accessed the magneto bed and finally who your consultant was.

    Many thanks.
