How Good, or Bad, is Ocarina of Time on 3DS

So, without giving too many spoilers, here is my first impressions of the 3DS version of OOT after an extended game play session.

Positive: This is a faithful port of the original N64 version of the game. It is very obvious from the moment you begin that you are playing a classic N64 title at it's best. Although the graphics are sharper and the colours are more defined, it is abundantly obvious that this game retains that "64 feel" and that makes the experience richer, and retro, for it. The 3D actually adds something to game play and cut scenes, it gives that optional extra and you can really see the added depth. This is a super game and even though I hadn't played it for about 13 years before this weekend, it seems like no time has passed at all, and then again it is obvious a lot of recent work has gone into this title.

Negative: Ignoring the lack of any StreetPass function or anything like that, this is the 5th major re release of this title in the last decade and a half, and yet the game follows the N64 walkthrough almost word for word. For newer gamers, this might not be a problem, but for those who have been playing Zelda longer then they care to remember I found this a little bit of a shortcut. I expected little differences here and there and so far, having just beaten the 4th boss of the game, I have yet to really receive this - and have found that I'm almost successfully guessing, from memory, what comes next. This can be seen as a good and a bad thing though. The only other flaw I have with the game is that, as a portable game, it's anything but.

The use of motion control, the complex puzzle levels and the engaging storyline mean there are little chances to pick up and play, put down, and then repeat. Essentially this is a full console game on a portable - and it can't escape this - you won't find anyone just picking this up on the bus and actually getting off at their stop. This really involves you going home, sitting down, and playing on your own - but doesn't that defeat the purpose?

    Anyone else have any comments?

It has an improved framerate and better grapics to be fair + I've never played it before :)

You can save the game anywhere + its perfect for train journeys:), also the pick up and play aspect is nice

You have the whole thing of the DS, which is just close the lid though.

You do, of course, but I just found this a really intense and fufilling game for a portable - which is excellent in many respects but you wonder if the future of portable gaming is to rehouse what would have previously been console greats since consoles are now focusing on multiplayer and online performance

I know what you mean about playing on public transport. However the fact that it lets you save whenever means it's possible. Plus remember, some of us have really long commutes!

Anyway, there is a lot more to handhelds than just playing them on public transport. I used my DS all the time at home. Now I'm doing the same with my 3DS.

Why? Sometimes it's nicer to just pick up a handheld and sit wherever I want rather than being tethered to a console and tv.

I'm not complaining, but tweaking textures & adding 3D does not warrant full whack price for a 15 year old game...even though it is a top 5 ever game for me.

It would have if they added more to the game than visuals, but like you said the actual game itself hasn't changed whatsoever. Nothing new in it, no new modern twists, it follows the walkthrough from 15 years ago. All of that in itself isn't negative towards the game, but it is towards the price.

    You're using a guide?!
That just takes all the fun out of the game!

I cleared the game 15 years ago without a guide, I don't need one today ;) Its another way of saying aside from the visuals, they've done literally nothing to the core of the game.

Well there is (mirrored) master quest + boss rush mode :P

    But yeah.

Still totally worth it in my opinion though!
Could have maybe bundled a virtual console title for free download with it.....but ah well...getting four swords for free in september :D
(it's 34 euro on amazon, n64 version was twelve on wii virtual console...also getting master quest, boss rush, 3d, portability...and a free soundtrack cd...seems worth it to me for these reasons)
