Just wondering if anybody reckons there is a noticeable difference in an alder bass body or an ash bass body .
Im looking to buy one for a bass project and not sure which one to get.

    Cheers

IMHO Ash looks nicer if your going for a trans finish.

    Hi Johnny

I already got the colour picked , its a translucent orange . You will be able to see the grain through the colour and will look amazing when its done . I have only seen a handfull of guitars the actual colour i want to get .
Im just wondering for tone what is the best wood to go for . I play a 1970 precision at the moment with EMG,s and love the sound but have no idea what the body is made from . Im concidering putting Bartolinies in the new bass http://www.bartolini.net/information/bass/new_bass_pu_s4.htm .

Alder can differ a good bit I think. I had an old Yamaha RBX270, alder body but seemed very light. It couldn't handle the low E too well. New mahogany body and it was sorted.

Alder and ash offer distinct tonal experiences.

Refer to this guide for more details: Warmoth wood guide. (Google is your friend).

If your bass has a solid finish then it is more than probably alder. If it´s natural or translucent then it is most likely ash. Sunburst could be either. Post a picture and we can tell you, it´s rather easy to differentiate between the two visually.
