Anyone here hunt with an Italian Spinone? I welcome any opinions. They are supposed to be steadier and more docile than other HPR breeds especially around children and other dogs/livestock. I'm afraid of buying one and ending up with a show dog. Is there any hunting Spinones in the country? Are they a good versatile breed for birds and deer?

    wirehair,
They are quiet a big dog in comparison to a gwp..too big for hunting cover imo,
their noses aren't as strong or good as other hpr's as is the opinion of most top hpr men in the uk.. there is a couple living in Roscrea that breed them, met them at a game fair one year in emo.. cant recall if they worked them or not but i have seen a couple of pups for sale on done deal... think there may only be two for sale again imo ideally you should have a choice from at least 4.. dunno if this helps

I sheared sheep for a fella outside mullingar who breeds spinones. Was the first time I'd seen one and was very taken by them

He was very adament that they were the best of the HPR's, shoots a lot of snipe with his.

Can pass on his number if your interested

I shot over one a couple of times, belonged to a friend of mine.
Extremely steady on point and they can walk for days, they also have an excellent nose imo.
They're huge dogs, they eat like horses though. Very friendly around children and they're nice and docile.
They're very strong swimmers too. This one liked swimming underwater a lot but I don't know if that's the norm.
