Just a question on getting my handicap

I've been playing golf for almost a year now, and last week I finally got membership at my local club :D
I'm just wondering regards getting my Official handicap, the three scorecards that I have to hand in, am I right in saying they have to be from competitions?
A friend had told me, now this could be complete b****x, that you had to have a handicap to play in these competitions?
Sorry for being a bit of a newb, But we all have to start somewhere :D

No need to apologise, as you say we all had to start somewhere. You won't be able to enter any official competitions until you have your handicap so your mate is right in this regard. Just play 3 casual rounds with a member marking your card and hand them in to the handicap secretary, they will then work out your handicap and get you registered with the GUI.

Give your handicap secretary a call - we'd have no problem with a guy playing in a competition alongside a couple of members in order to get a card marked but I guess most people prefer to do it casually, outside of a competition environment. You wouldn't be entered in the competition (without a handicap) - just playing alongside guys who are. If the time-sheet isn't mad busy there shouldn't be a problem but best check to see what's the norm at your new club.
