    Hi all
I've a 16Gb 3GS Iphone that is not turning on, but when connected to iTunes get recognized and suggests that I restore the phone, this I do, but I get error 1601.
Tries using iREB r4 and it puts it into a pwned state, but when updating after that I still get the 1601 error.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated!

I had a similar problem on an iPhone 4.
I had to installed "hotspot shield" and then the restore worked perfectly.

I just uninstalled hotspot shield after.

Install it on your pc not your iPhone.
There might be a different program you can instal if you have mac.

SRS that is the stupidest answer I have ever heard, hot spot shield is a method of faking your IP address for watching the likes of Hulu when you are outside of America.

If this did work for you I can assure you it was just a coincidence.

@OP, if you are using Windows, I would suggest that you create a new user account and log into it, then download the latest itunes and try a different usb port / cable.

    this should fix the 1601.

Do you think I came up with this solution myself you would you say I just typed my problem into google and the hotspot shield answer came up in another forum?
I spent six hours trying to bring my iPhone back from the dead and this worked for me in the end so tell me how that is stupid.

kjl, you've been warned before about your hostility towards other users of this forum. Any more of this kind of attitude and you'll start receiving infractions - final warning.

SRS - Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work :(. I was a bit skeptical too about it working but I figured I'd give it a try.

kjl - I'm using windows and did download the latest iTunes, uninstalled the previous version, reboot pc, install latest version, but alas no joy. I tried a different pc too thinking it might help, but no luck. Haven't tried a different USB cable, but I know my cable is working fine and the fact that the pc beeps when plugging and unplugging the iphone.

I removed the battery from the phone and charged it externally using a PSU hoping that perhaps the battery was at fault, but still no luck. When plugging it into a new PC a window pops up saying that an iphone in recovery (DFU mode) has been detected. Trying to kick it out of this mode is what I'm trying to do.

You can try kicking it out of recovery using tiny umbrella.
If you've got 95% the way through a recovery and then got the error then tiny umbrella probably won't work though.

Tried Tiny Umbrella, but it didn't work. It didn't show it was connected in Tiny Umbrella. Thinking perhaps there might be a fault with the logic board itself (display chip or whatever). I had the logic board in the oven drying it out and this helped a lot as previously it wasn't even being recognized by iTunes.
The screen remains black throughout any program I try to use.

So the iPhone was moisture damaged?
If that's the case and you've damaged a board then all the software it the world is not going to bring it back.

If you had another 3GS then you could swap boards around until you isolated the fault to a specific board. Once you know which board is causing the fault you could then either replace the board or get it reflowed.

If you don't have another 3GS I doubt anyone would give you a loan of one to be used as a Guinea pig.
