Hi All I just got given a 3g Iphone by a friend cos it needs repairs and he decided to get a new one and pass his old one to me. I was gonna get it fixed in the next day or two, new data port something, but I realise that when it's all fixed up I don't know what to do, it says no sim right now so should I try to pop an old sim into it?

I never make many calls so what network would give the best deal for pay as you go?
Jail break, worth it? it's out of warranty so is there a downside?
Should I do all the firmware updates?
can I keep any of the apps my friend got or will they only work with his sim?

any other handy tips :) apps for note taking and organizers like one note or outlook.

Any pitfalls I'm likely to encounter.

Oh do I really have to use Itunes?

    Thanks
    Toft

yes you'll have to use iTunes.

If you got your hands on a iPhone 3G or upwards a new update (iOS 5) coming soon would allow you to ditch itunes so to speak.

being honest itunes is a nice piece of software (allbeit very bloated) and runs well on any mac i've thrown at it (same can't be said for windows).

nope you can you use Copytrans but it uses iTunes processes so you will have to install that bloated POS and then use copytrans to drag and drop

jailbreak all the way, download dtunes and ifile from cydia, use ifile to transfer mp3s folders to iphone and use dtunes to play them directly.

simple file management and no horse**** on your comp.

    Itunes is for noobs.

Thanks for the replies every one. I want to give untethered jail breaking a go, but I read(here http://thebigboss.org/jailbreak-now) that apple is no longer supporting the 3g phone.

would that mean that I wouldn't be able to up date my phone if I had to reset it to original?
