Until there is a root and branch overhaul of Broadcacting Authority Ireland, FM licences will be granted to the jokers with money who masquerade as radio stations. Irish FM music radio is TRIPE.

Yeah but what do you really think? There are a bunch of threads and countless comments that allude to your complaint.

    Those figures should be higher!!

The BAI is mostly to blame for licencing sub-standard community and temp stations whilest protecting the main money makers on the air.

I don't think those figures will ever be higher.

People like different things, and for some reason at least 75% of the population are happy to listen to tripe from Jedward, Westlife and pointless chats with nobodies from "reality" TV, masquerading as topical discussion.

Well I try to tune in to Highland Radio for a while every day. Wouldn't call it tripe. As far as a second choice, I'd have to go with BBC Radio 2.

What's the point of Irish radio? Clearly torture. Particularly if it's FM 104. Remove Katy Perry, Rihanna, Adele, Lady Gaga and The Script from their playlists and they are up that creek without a paddle. In the meantime, I believe they are piping FM 104 directly into the cells at Guantanamo Bay in lieu of waterboarding. Amnesty International are investigating...

Listen to another station that has music you like so.. a whole load of people like the pop music crap so stations like fm104 are targetting a market.. blame the people of Ireland. Not the stations

Thanks, I do that already. Unfortunately I work in an office where by sad fate of geography, the only radio station that can be tuned in is FM 104 so I have to hear it a lot. It's certainly not by choice that I listen to a station that ironically interrupts a feature called '5 hits in a row' to tell you that you are listening to 5 hits in a row WITHOUT interruption or that insultingly tells us 'We know you don't like listening to the same hits over and over - that's why we don't do it'. I think I will blame the station on at least those two things if that's ok...

Are we discussing Irish Radio or Irish speaking radio?

Irish radio is fine, but it takes a lot of time to find what you are looking for.
I agree that the BAI needs an overhaul.. their red tape and administration waste of time exercises they put on stations seems to be a tick the box exercise. Don't agree about the smaller / community stations.. there are some very good programmes in there, generally done by people for free who actually have an interest. Some very good presenters in that sector that should get a break with bigger stations, but we all know that radio is all about who you know.

What if you want to hear music(classic rock for me) with minimal twaddle?

I listen to BBC Radio 2 a lot as we have it playing at work through a satellite system. It's superb with a brilliant range of music and and Jamie Cullums jazz show on Tuesdays is unmissable.
I gave up on Irish radio a long time ago and when I tune in whilst driving I realise that I am not missing out.The same boring bland music and the same topics of conversation over and over again, politics, religion and sport with little or no world news unlike the BBC.

Radio 2 today has as interesting line up of presenters in a schedule change to showcase the station.
