Age for pubs/bars

Just wondering why there isn't a universal age for access to pubs/bars.
I'm two weeks away from being 19, but unfortunately look about 15/16

I know that's an issue though, so I take two forms of ID with me everywhere. Recently I've found though, that when I go to get in somewhere, they'll let me in - but say 'it's usually 21's / 23's in here darling but I'll let you off'. Whereas, the 'just turned 18' girls that look much, much older, don't get anything said to them.

I find that when I'm planning a night out now, I've to accept that I mightn't even be able to get in somewhere. Legally I'm allowed to purchase alcohol, but, there's a chance that if somewhere is over 21's / 23's - I mightn't be able to sit there and drink it??

State law says 18 for buying alcohol but private establishments (bars/hotels/etc) can set their own age limit/restriction as regards entrance permissions (not necessarily related technically to just drink).

Just annoys me when I've seen 16/17 years olds being let in without having an ID checked, just because they look older, and there's me, nearly 19, and could be turned away from the same place....

Could be? DO you get turned away often?

Dont worry about looking young still. You'll spend enough time looking old.

Frustrating when you see it happen all the time.
Then some are let in that are clearly under even the legal age limit for purchasing drink and the door notice says 21/25 and above are supposed to be only allowed in.

Twice I've had to practically name drop every single person behind the bar that I know in a local pub. "Over 23's darling sorry" Eventually let me in once I mentioned his boss. If I hadn't though, it would have been a fairly bad night considering everyone else had been let in ahead of me...

Well did you mention it to his boss afterwards?

    Universal would mean just that.

Anywho..I believe the legal age for being served alcohol in a bar in Greece is 16...BUT the youngsters In Greece choose to spend their money on better things.

I presume that Tanya May means that you are a girl. "Over 23s" usually applies to (i) guys, (ii) drunk guys or girls from 18-23. Presumably this is why he let you in despite you being 19.

I found this really annoying during college (fadó agus fadó), but now that I'm an oldie 24 year old and a taxpayer and all of those horrible things, I see the benefit of going out for a few quiet drinks in a pub that doesn't allow 18-23 year olds.

Do young wans today know how loud and obnoxious they can be?/ fiddles with pension book.

You should be happy that you look young now, I also looked about 15 when I was 18, I remember getting refused from local pubs, even with my passport. Sucked then, but now I'm happy as I look much younger than my actual age.

If you're trying to get into a popular bar in town, then I think if you look particualrly young, they'll refuse you... it's an image thing.

depends how well you present yourself ( apperance and how you approach the pub/bar/etc ) and how attracted the bouncers are to you. Simples.

If you haven't realised that tits = entry to anywhere, regardless of age - by now, you've some catching up to do for a 19 year old.

You probably just got in because the doorstaff thought you were ok.

A word from the wise - name dropping seldom, if ever impresses. In fact at that staff most bouncer's will dig in their heels and not allow you entry.

What do you think a pub/club owner would say to me if I let a ropey fvcker in, or someone under aged, or barred (and twenty other things I can think up in a nano-second) if I said "But Mr.Murphy they said they knew you" :o

In future continue to carry ID or go to a bar with no doorstaff.

Pubs aren't the place for anyone under 18. Even then, some caution should be exercised. The over 60's really take the piss at times with their arrogance and insults.

To a certain extent, I disagree.
I have seen many a better behaved under 18 year olds in a bar than an older, more drunken adult slobbering and annoying others around them.
Thats said, one of my pet hates is seeing VERY young kids in a bar (understandable) bored out of their tree while ma and da gets plastered in ignorance and "couldn't care less about their kids" behaviour/attitude.

To be honest, I have never found any over 60's either being arrogant.
I can honestly say I have never heard an over 60 year old in my life giving out this matter.

Exactly... which is a disgrace. Is probably one of the main reasons I get in, but still, it's a fairly horrible thought.

It's then also when I see people in their 30's being let is without any hassle when they're obviously already heavily intoxicated....
Not one of my friend have ever been thrown out of a pub/club, yet, I've seen more than a few over 30's being thrown out...

I'm a quiet type who enjoys a bit of light banter with friends in a pub. Sitting around enjoying the night and minding our own business. I don't see why just because I look young, it should mean that I could be refused entry, when, I look inside and there's 16/17 years old, and over 23's who are a complete mess....

Which places have you been refused from?

Its 23 and over for the lads, 18 or over for the girls, that seems to be the way. Thats why when I want to get in somewhere thats "strictly 21s" I go with a group of girls, vast majority of the time I get in as a result

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 266 ✭✭snooleen

If you carry yourself with confidence, more often than not you won't be refused. Although in town, regardless of how old you look, most places ID anyone who looks under 25 which is fair enough what with all the young wans looking like Jordan and what-not.

Certain places should be 23's and I'm not just saying that because I was 23 on Tuesday :D. But I hate going to some places in town that are full of 17-20 year olds that are just out of their faces causing fights or getting sick.

I know it's not all of them, but it only takes a few. It all comes down to the bouncers not being more aware of I.D's.
