    Hi all,

not sure if this is the right section.

I want to buy a tv, i noticed that on amazon tvs say freeview HD but I know I can't get that - its for the UK..but i also checked the model number on saorview website to see if its compatible and it is... all good.

my question is some tvs say freeview and some say freeview HD, so will the tvs that say freeview be able to get saorview in HD or will I need one that says Freeview HD to receive Saorview in HD?

    Thanks.

also tvs from the uk generally don't have uhf is that right?

as in will I be forced to use saorview and wont be able to pick up the analogue if i bought a tv from amazon uk?

    thanks :)

Plain FreeView will NOT get SaorView, it must be HD.
UK TVs don't have a VHF tuner which is still need for analogue in some parts of Ireland. However, if you have upgraded to SaorView, you will definetly not want to watch analogue anymore.

im a bit confused though - the model number for the following tv:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-UE32D5000-32-inch-Widescreen-Freeview/dp/B004S5ZWJM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

    is listed here:

    http://www.saorview.ie/products-retailers/saorview-approved-product-listings/samsung/

    any help/advice please?

This is the bit that matters in the spec

    Tuner/Broadcasting
    HD Tuner Built-in:Yes
    DTV Reception (DVB-T/T2/C/S2):DVB-T/C)

DVB-T/T2 means it will work here with saorview.

Not all of UK can get Freeview HD yet so it is sometimes omitted.

excellent, so what you are saying is getting saorview, which has one HD channel so far, has no dependency on whether the uk sourced tv says freeview or freeview HD?

no, I am only referring to this particular model, if you want to get a different model then check the listings on saorview site.

well yes, assuming its listed on the saorview website does it make no difference to saorview users whether it says freeview or freeview HD?

I think the confusion might come from the fact that no one in their right mind would buy an SD FreeView TV in the UK anymore when HD is becoming the norm. So to the UK market FreeView = HD.

how does the confusion ome from that?

    my confusion is this:

If it is on the Saorview site, you should be absolutely fine. Just be 100% sure you get all the detail of the model number correct as there can be small differences.....

As a failsafe, I would buy it here (or at least in NI, say from Richer or SamsYerMan) so you have some ability to deal with this (physically take it back) if you have any issues.

By confusion I mean that some Uk companies take it for granted that you want a HD tv.
It's like going into an irish shop now and asking for a telly. Only a dodgy dealer would try and flog you an analogue only set.
The average punter goes into a shop to buy a telly, he doesn't know or care if it runs on steam, cow dung or whatever. he wants to turn it on and it works.

"assuming its listed on the saorview website does it make no difference to saorview users whether it says freeview or freeview HD? "

No, it make no difference. A Saorview certified product may or may not be freeview/freeview-HD certified or certified for many other DTT operations throughout Europe.

For viewers who can receive overspill signal from a UK transmitter it would be a good idea to look out for a product that is both Saorview and Freeview-HD certified.

There have been quite a few UK freeview tv's in the past 3 years which are saorview spec. We got a Sony bravia v4500 series 3 years ago specifically for the RTE trial channels and two years ago we got an LG freesat TV. So it really depends on the technical spec.
