Hey boards, Long time reader first time poster. Today I went to the IMC Dunlaoghaire. Bought two tickets, was chared 50 cent service charge on each. I also bought the mandatory popcorn and drinks and was charged a further one euro service charge. The price of popcorn ,coke and tickets is crazy enough as it is, without having to pay a further two euro. anyone have any thoughts on this?

I'd agree, going to watch a movie buying two tickets, popcorn and drinks is a complete rip off.
Can be anything up to 50 euro to enjoy a good film with a bit of popcorn and a drink..a complete joke.

    No, but ive tried it.

No, but I wasn't told that there would be a service charge. I'd like to pour my own coke and get my own popcorn, but vaulting the counter would be frowned upon I'd imagine!

"Popcorn in cinemas is a ripoff"

This is part one of our new AH series,"The Bleedin' obvious"

    Next week "Mobile phone charge,wtf"

Later on we'll be examining the issue "I went to Oxygene and paid 5 million euro for a warm pint of 'Ken and a poxy burger".

I was going to say it's your own fault if you went to see a Cameron Diaz film but then I looked at the other offerings, so maybe the best of a bad bunch

    Senna?
Possibly the greatest documentary ever made?

    You deserve all you got.

The only reason they say it's a service charge is to bump up the price even more. Any other place has any charges for services included in the price...they don't make a song and dance about it. The cinema just adds another charge and calls it a "service charge" to make you think you weren't paying towards it in the first place.

At the end of the day, yup, cinemas are asbolute rip offs when it comes to food.

Service charge for a cinema! That's more of a joke than a violation.

I don't know, while I was waiting for Senna to download I watch another 30 minute documentary about Senna and Prost from years ago, pretty much the same documentary.

Bar some extra behind the scenes stuff the Senna documentary had nothing exceptional about it.

Had a look at this. Apparently the charge on the ticket is incorporated into the price, so you are paying the price that is advertised.

The service charge on the food is a completely other story though and they are charging people money they possibly shouldn't.

And they wonder why the film industry is in trouble...

It's for this very reason I don't visit the cinema, and the morons who insist on chattin durin the film or usin their mobile phone or eatin loudly etc. It's a horrendous experience.

The cinema is always extortionate though

DunLaoghaire cinema isn't even that expensive (comparatively). Town cinemas cost way more more!

Service charge for a cinema? FFS.

Speaking of rip offs, since when are plastic bags 70 bloody cent? You can get a can of lager for that ffs. Needless to say I refused to pay and carried the stuff home in my arms.

Some retail outlets like Dunnes Stores now do "their own" plastic bags and can charge what they want for them. These are usually heavier duty than the standard white ones and can be used again.

I think most people have got the message about bringing their own and those that don't deserve to pay the extra.
