Both California quail and Northern Bobwhites have been introduced to parts of continental Europe, though as someone else pointed out the damp Irish climate is unlikely to suit them.

Wild Quail are said to frequent Ireland, they're a summer visitor from the med. They've a huge reproductive capacity and are said to be good sport. We've never had serious quail numbers due to a loss of wildflower/haymeadow/ rough grassland habitat types in modern farming. Plus the climate here probably isn't the best for their tiny young.

I remember reading in Douglas Butler's book about Bobwhite quail being released in huge numbers somewhere but they virtually all disappeared over the winter.

    Here's a European report on Quail : http://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/conservation/wildbirds/hunting/docs/Quail%20EU_%20MP.pdf
