Is a movie ever not suitable for popcorn?

I love popcorn, and I buy it 98% of the time when I go to the flicks. Morning noon or night, regardless of the movie or the time of day. But a friend of mine thinks some movies aren't suitable for munching down on popcorn, like 187 hours for example. I disagree I think its all entertainment and I love me come corn of the popped variety! :D

So what do you guys think?

Well any horror movie that might make you jump and scatter said popcorn everywhere.

Hunger with Michael Fassbender. If you can munch your way through that then you have a stronger stomach than me.

Don't buy popcorn anymore, the cost has just gotten beyond a joke. Also I frequent the IFI where they mercifully do away with popped corn.

However, I did buy popcorn for Antichrist despite its inappropriateness, because I hadn't had any in a while. I regret nothing, although I recall it being a bit salty.

Tesco do a nice big bag of sweetened movie popcorn for about €1.20.

Much nicer than the stale sh*te in most cinemas!

If I'm really broke I'll microwave my own and smuggle it in it my handbag

I've only ever gone to the cinema without some kind of food once, and that was to see The Human Centipede. Ugh.

Popcorn during torture-horror films isn't for me at all. Unless you buy a smaller tub and have finished it by the time it starts lol.

Ever tried watching CSI while eating? Mank!

Some places that just pump salt in to their popcorn deserve to be put in the popper. Muck.

But yeah, it's automatic to buy some for a flick. I think it's part of the "ritual".

I rarely get popcorn these days, simply because it's over priced and generally bland, stale and tasteless muck. I much prefer to buy a bag of toffee popcorn for a euro or two and bring it in with me.

Killer Clowns From Outer Space. Popcorn isn't your friend.

Lidl do awesome toffee popcorn for €1.20, it's the best I've ever had!

The only thing I don't mind forking out for in the cinema is one of those frozen fantas - nom

I LOVE popcorn, and always get it at the cinema. I often eat it at home watching films too, but I wouldn't eat it for certain films. I recently watched Hunger and Schildler's List and didn't eat it. I couldn't be weeping into my popcorn! And I don't watch scary or gruesome films but I don't know how anyone could eat anything watching them.

Don't eat popcorn at the cinema as I have been informed that it is made days before it is served, sometimes up to a week before.

Hmmm we're nearly 50/50 on this poll with a few hating any food in the cinema.

I munched overpriced popcorn for torture porn flicks without hassle. Watching something on the screen never turns me off my food... except maybe the barf contest scene in Stand by Me :D

My mate put his down for the scene in the Changelind in
    the women's institute
... but had no problem finishing it off during
    the hanging scene
    .

I didn't eat anything during The Hunger.. but I watched it at home not in the cinema, with trepidation, and deservedly so.

When I did eat popcorn in the cinema - many moons ago - I was a fan of Yop and Popcorn, or Yopcorn. It's surprisingly awesome.

Well that's just simply not true. The level of tastiness does often depend on the time of day. Sometimes I go early in the mornings at the weekends and the popcorn is super fresh, then other times I'll meet up for lunch and catch a flick with mates and its clearly a morning batch that's been there since they opened. But go during peak times when they are selling loads and you are back to fresh popcorn again!

However it is extremely overpriced and I couldn't justify it if it weren't for the unlimited card. :D

Buying snacks in Cineworld borders on the obscene IMO. Cost me eleven euro to get a ticket yesterday at 5PM (barely go enough to warrant Unlimited) and not a chance I'm giving them another tenner for a tiny ice-cream and a small cup of watered sugar. Other cinemas I can deal with, but Cineworld is an absolute farce.

Might be different where you are, but here they make the popcorn on weekend mornings, bag that popcorn and use it for other days during the week.

Not the same for every cinema obviously, but certainly wouldn't buy the popcorn where I am.

depends on the movie and if I'm hungry enough.
Certainly wouldn't have wanted popcorn during Irreversible...

I used to work in UCI so know by now to ask for it from "the popper". Butter half an half too :)

Popcorn and trailers are the best thing about going to the movies!

    EDIT: Adding to this;

We used to make popcorn all morning and bag it in these large blue bags, label them with a date 5 days from the day it was made and they went into storage. These were then used in order and placed in the warmers out the front.

Does the free refills thing lead to a lot of people wandering in and out during the film?

No it magically fills up when you reach the bottom... :p Ah its not as bad as you imagine. Couple of people moving round but you get that anyway. Placement is key to not letting this annoy you.

Didn't get popped corn last night at Aliens as I was literally after wolfing down my dinner and I was surprised to hear how much "food" noises there are! I guess I don't notice them when I'm contributing to them! They didn't annoy me I drowned it out when the movie started but was still surprised.

Popcorn is a tasteless waste of money. Anyway I'd same something really sobering along the line of Hotel Rwanda or Schindler's List might be a bit inappropriate.

In some 'indie' movies where a guy sits in a room eating his shoes (for symbolic reasons), or at a movie thats on at an art gallery, you may be looked down upon by the Gods of Indie-Chic.
