According to this it's between 1980 and 1986:
    Sligo CC: EI
    EI 1 to EI 9999 (Dec 1903 - Nov 1959).
    AEI 1 to ZEI 999 (Nov 1959 - Feb 1980).
    1 EI to 9999 EI (Feb 1980 - Apr 1986).
    1 AEI to 835 AEI (Apr - Dec 1986).

Given it's position in the number sequence, I'd be guesstimating it was registered around 1984 or so.
That MAY or MAY NOT have been when it was actually manufactured, vehicle registration particulars were more... erm... 'flexibly' interpreted and recorded back then. :D

The car was first registered in Feb 1980. Here's how I know :)

He's not in here much though. You'll find him over in the Classic Cars forum :)

Thanks everyone for the help, but I guess it's post 1980 anyway?

It's saying that's when that number was first available for registration, not when the actual car was registered. It's the same month as the start month for that range above:
    1 EI to 9999 EI (Feb 1980 - Apr 1986).

Also, back then any used imports would have got a new registration (since they weren't really age-related), so e.g. a '76 car imported from the UK in '84 would get an '84 reg.

Here's another more accurate website that I have come across, It may be a little old for your search, but interesting anyway

I had 8627EI, which was a 1986, Sligo registered Fiesta. Don't know if that's any help.
