    Hey, I am getting married in 5 weeks and someone asked me the other day if I had my 'wedding bands' done --- this is an announcemant in the paper to say that you are getting married, then I was told it is a legal obligation to allow people to object to the marriage...

    Is this the case, Thank you for all help in advance.

    It's a marriage announcement, not planning permission!

    Wedding banns used to be read from the pulpit for three weeks in a row before the wedding to allow people to object. Thankfully that archaic custom has gone by the wayside and now your only legal obligation is to register your intent to marry three months before the wedding. There's more information here.

    :) Sorry if this sounded like a stupid question but belive it or not this is my 1st time getting married, so I do not know everything.

    I am doing fine with plans until someone comes along and freaks me out by saying stuff like that.... ie wedding bands. Not your responses :D

    Once the state has been notified there's nothing else you have to do as regards announcing it (other than invitations that is!)

    It's wedding banns, not bands. They used to do it in Ireland, although not any more. They still do it in Anglican churches in the UK (any maybe other demoninations as well, I'm not sure), you can do it instead of getting a wedding licence and doing the whole notifying of the intent to marry (according to my wedding mags). I quite like the idea actually - I'd do it if I could, especially as I'm overseas and it's going to be a pain going to meet with the regristrar the week before the wedding.

    Good luck with the wedding and try not to freak out at people asking you things unless you think they really know what they're talking about! It just seems cruel to stress a bride out when you're not sure what you're talking about - people shouldn't be messing with you like that! :)
