Pay rise issue

    Hi

I was wondering if i could get a few opinions on my current situation.

I've been in my current job nearly 3 years now, in that time i've never gotten a pay rise. I have though been given a day off during term time to study as i'm doing a course.

I've been there 3 years. In the first year I had nothing to do and was expecting to be let go or have my hours cut. At the end of this year I handed in my notice as I wanted to get a Master's degree and I could see me losing my job anyway. A week or two after I handed in my notice my boss asked me could I do the course part time as he didnt want to lose me. I was offered a day off per week without it affecting my pay which I took. My second year was really really busy and involved me coming in early and staying late etc. to get the job done. With or without my day's leave for college I would have had to do this.

I'm coming up to my third year and things for the past while work has gotten pretty quiet and have been for a bit now.

The reason this thread has come about is that I was talking to friends in the pub about my situation. I would be on a pretty low salary for my experience and education. They were of the opinion that I should ask for a pay rise. I was of the opinion that I should wait until I finish college and ask for one then. I finish in December.

    What does anyone else think?

Sounds like you got a 20% pay rise when work gave you one day off a week without lowering your pay.

I dont mean to sound harsh here but in the current climate you should consider yourself lucky to have a job never mind looking for a payrise there are many with a masters that cant find work, if I were you id keep your head down work hard study hard then when you have finished college look for a more suitable job thats if there is one out there for you

yeh - i think you are lucky to get the day off - I personally wouldn't ask for a pay rise just yet... wait it out till your finished college,

also, look at the online tax calculators and see for yourself how little an extra 1 or 2k per year gives you per month

thats kinda what i thought about the day off being a pay rise of sort. i was just surprised my mates said i should ask for a pay rise. i think its to do with my basic being so low. i have been applying for other jobs recently and the starting salary in all of these has been alot more than what i'm on now, incl the 20% for the day off. i obviously didnt get offered any of these spots.

    thanks anyway everyone.
