looking for some advice! bought our house about 8 yrs ago, neighbours house is owned by son of our the person we bought off. Had a lot of probs with emptying the tank about twice a year, think his sewerage is somehow connected to ours. want to get it checked out but dont know what to do! Any advice?

Presuming one of the houses is relatively new, there should be a record of it at the planning office. I would get a copy of the Site Layout Plan from the planning file, this should show you the layout of the sewerage system, possibly for both houses.

Get it checked out with a good local AT who can advise further. It shouldn't be the case that both houses are connected to one system.

Also contact your solicitor and find out the situation regarding the tank system as you only bought the house 8 years ago it is likely there was a report done on the property first. See what that says.

Is there an inspection man-hole, before the waste enters the septic tank, if so there should be just one pipe, from your house. Flush the loo, and look.If there are two pipes, and flushing your loo, running sink/bath etc, nothing from other pipe, wait till the neighbour washes the dishes and look. Anthing from second pipe........trouble.

there are companies that could do an inspection for you (camera and rod type jobbie) but Sydthebeats option seems like the simplist.

there is legislation coming soon, giving LA's/EPA more powers to 'clean up' septic tanks, and replace them with treatment units et as appropriate. I understand there will be grants made availabe...

twice a year sounds like a lot even if another house is connected, as PUT said check the planning. 8 years ago, I think I was spec'n biounits by then?
