Holiday Idea

Ok, I am not sure which forum this thread should be in.
However I would like to go on holiday with my mate in September. The kind of holidays I like are usually road trip type of holidays: somewhere hottist - not too hot. Plenty to see and do. Not tacky. I love to experience the local culture and traditions. Lots of scenic places and history. Nice wine and food.

The thing is, usually these holidays are hard work and I am wrecked afterwards, but invigorated. However this year I would like to go on a holiday where I would stay in one place and perhaps hire a car from there and tour around. I cannot usually do resorty holidays but I would be willing to see what is out there. eg. I stayed in Albuferia in Portugal - this was long enough there for me. But it was nice. But it got claustrophobic.

So can someone recommend a place/places where we could go to and relax while not be overrun with tourists and its tackiness and still have a nice time with some sun.

I know this is vague - sorry. Also probably travel between 2-6 hrs and average cost.

Hi Sporina, I am in the same boat as you. Was looking for somewhere a bit different to go in September also . Me and my hubbie don't particularly like resorts and usually like to move a couple of times during the course of our trip, combining a bit of relaxation with culture, nice restaurants and general scenery and sights. This year, like you, we wanted to stay in one place and do day trips from there so after extensive research we have settled on Slovenia. It looks absolutely gorgeous and has been described as the "New Zealand" of Europe. There seems to be a great mixof things to do with a small coastal area on the Adriatic, the capital Lubljana which looks charming and do-able in a day or so, vineyards and absolutely stunning looking scenery in the Julian Alps and around Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. And the great thing is that it seems to be around the size of Wales, so nowhere is that awfully far. It is possible to do day trips into Italy, Austria, Croatia too depending on where you base yourselves. We have taken a house in the Julian Alps and hope to be able to cover a good bit of ground from there but to completely switch off too. Weather is described as warm sunny days and cool evenings which is fine with me. Best of all is we were able to get direct flights from Dublin with Slovenia national Airline Adria and because we are flying in and out on saturdays, they worked out at very reasonably at roughly €250 per person return including 20kg bag which is standard as part of the fare. Anyway, I had been deliberating so much and I spotted your question so thought I would make the suggestion. You have probably already booked something but no harm to share ones knowledge. Enjoy whatever you get up to.
