As the title of the thread suggests, I'm looking to get some prints put on Canvas, was in Harvey Normans the other day and they are charging €150 for an A1 size print, which seems a little extortionate to me, or am I wrong?

Where do the users of this forum get their prints done? A nice balance between quality and cost would be greatly appreciated, recession and all!

    Thanks

Thats not a bad price. I see in Harveys they use the same printer and ink as I do, the ink itself is longlife, stcst will correct me but something along the lines of fade resistant behind glass for around 80 years. Now obviously you want to ensure it is good quality canvas as well as ink too, you get what you pay for;) I have seen many a person show me a canvas and say sure I only paid 50 for that, a year or 2 later the colour has completely changed whereas I have canvasses hanging for a few years with not a single change in them

Another thing to check, last I checked HN canvasses were stretched on a frame with a backing, i.e. the canvas was actually stuck to a backing board rather than just being stretched around the bars themselves. It makes it an easier job for the person to do as stretching a canvas is quite hard but I guess it can take away from the final prouct, the thing that is so special about canvas is that it is an image printed on material.

I reckon speak to Steve, aka stcst www.360-dpi.com although I am sure he will show his face here soon and correct any mistakes I have said.

i think they use a slightly newer printer Rachael

with K3 inks in them i think your printer is K2 inks they are similar but not quite the same

the difference is there are i think only 2 blacks in the k2 inkset

in terms of the price from HN, price isnt bad, but My price is actually about the same, for way better canvas and stretched properly

if you want it to last a lot lot longer and even be easy to clean, the best thing is to heat seal the canvas, which adds a little to the cost but makes a huge difference to the robustness of the canvas

£150 for an A1 canvas print isnt bad but I'd be inclined to say you'll get far better for that money if you use a dedicated printer, such as stcstc or similar.

but what does it look like a year down the line never mind 10??? When it comes to printing quality is more important than price, sure the canvas alone never mind the ink of stretcher bars would cost me 24 euro.

    Hi ArmchairNinja,
Were Harvey Norman charging €150 to include stretching on frame? I do canvases part time from home. I am from a graphic reproduction and digital printing background. My prices would be almost half of what Harvey Norman are charging. Plus my prices include stretching onto a chunky 1.5 inch deep gallery frame and delivery to anywhere in Ireland.
Have a look at my website in the signature below.

Welcome to rip-off ireland, thats just crazy for an A1 canvas.

Look at ebay, search for your photos on canvas but bear in mind the delivery costs to ireland can add up but I gurantee that it will be nowhere as near as €150.

When looking on ebay, look for a printer that prints on 100% cotton canvas and varnishes that canvas also, as there are loads of coyboys that print just rubbish.

There is a guy in Miltown Malbay who is doing canvas for me @40 euro and he charges 50 euro to the public.I will be getting some done this week.I can post you a pic of a 8x12 inch print and also a pic of the canvas if you want. The canvas is also chunky better than the narrow ones plus he wraps the picture round the sides of the frames.

Im not sure of the size but they are roughly 3x2 foot in size that the been large size.Plus you can have bigger and smaller.

    Pixsavers dundrum,
    20x30'' €95. 4'' wide frames, Gallery or non-wrap.
    16x20'' €70 and 12x16'' €50,
Using the epson 7880 and fujihunt 440g white cotton canvas or 390g artist canvas (which is better with higher contrast or bw - proper black blacks)
Main difference is using the wunderbars which use a dowel system (i dont know the proper word) inside the wooden bars so the canvas tightens around the bars instead of manually pulling the print into place. Makes for a longer lasting and (imho) better quality canvas than Harvey's. Also can be done in 24 hours. They can do custom sizes too.

The Xpress Art place in nutgrove sc do quantity discounts, and they seem to have the best range in Dublin, they seem to be able to do anything.

Anyone have any tips for processing an image to get the best results when printing on canvas? I have 4 images I want to get done on canvas as gifts for family members and I'm gonna go with the 2 for 1 offer on Photobox.ie at the moment. (€73 for two 30"x20" prints).

Do I need to increase settings like brightness/sharpness?
My screen is quite bright and I'm pretty sure I'll lose a lot of colour/contrast when printing.
The offer runs out on thursday evening so if anyone has any tips please let me know.

    Thanks

Before spending money like that I would want to see the images on a Calibrated Monitor. Otherwise if the prints come back looking like rubbish you don't know if it was them or you at fault.

Is there any way I could do a monitor calibration tonight without one of those expensive calibration devices? Like a website or piece of software with a set of samples to work off?

The savings on the prints seems worth the risk as I've been looking to get these done for a while and the average price for a single print that size is 70-120

be aware not all canvas prints are the same

I know of a bunch of supplier (some of which are mentioned in this thread) who use very cheap canvas and even cheaper none manufacturer inks!!!

now the prints may look good when you get them, but not sure they will last as long as you expect

    as for processing

canvas do kill a little contrast, it also gives a perception of softness too. so they are both things that you really do need to be aware of.

Guys, I have an really nice image of my five year old that I want to put on canvas, can someone recommend the best place to get good quality canvas prints? I'm hoping to have this print for years so I don't mind paying for a quality product. Thanks :)
