Rust

    Hey guys, I'm just looking for a bit of info from all you Boardsies in the know! My car (10 year old) as one or two bits of rust on the bodywork as you can see from the pics below. I'm just wondering what my options are to stop/treat it? I'd be looking at the cheapest option possible as I'm a student!

    I'd really appreciate any info you have!:)

    Here's a good how to guide on removing the rust and treating it. Filler maybe optional, depending on the crater left after removing the rust.

    The area around the mirror is best left to a professional. Area around the wheel arch should be a DIY job, plenty of products available from your local motor factors or the likes of Halfords, the hardest part will be matching the paint to finish the job.

    Out of interest have you been leaving the car exposed to the sea or driving it regularly on a beach, the corrosion looks out of the ordinary for a 10 year old car.

    I saw a 04 berlingo with the same sort of rust on the passenger wing. So much so that it was nearly easier to replace the wing.

    Sand back the loose bits, loads of Kurust, prime and paint would be the cheapest option. Then cross the fingers. Is that Focus ex UK ?

    Good guess RoverJames! Yup it is indeed a UK import, I brought it to my mechanic shortly after I got it for a full service and he spotted it was an import straight away too, said it was all the salted roads!

    Thanks for all the advice everyone, I'm still undecided on what to do, it's a not a huge issue at the moment but I would like to get it sorted!

    The reason why under the wing mirror rusts is because it rubs off the door. Sand it back about 2mm and it will be fine.

    On the issue of salt from roads during icy weather causing body work corrosion would it be reasonable to assume that this could also cause corrosion to various bits of the chassis and under body of the car that regular washing wouldn't get rid of?
    In which case is there a risk of component failure from this? Presume an underbody wash after/during gritting season is something that should be done?
