PS3 went kaput last night, mid game it powers off and a red light blinks. Turned it on today and it worked, happy days I thought, then a couple of minutes later it's gone again .... balls.

It's an original 60gb. Luckily have an original 40gb too, but that's not backward compatible, plus I've lost all my photos off the 60gb.

Exactly the same thing happened to me last night at around 10.30pm.

2 minutes into my first COD MW2 multiplayer game and boom - same as the OP 60Gb launch PS3

I'm gutted, don't have the money to be buying a new one, the trusty PS3 has been getting me through this recession as I don't go out any more.

Is there any sort of recourse with Sony given how common and widespread the design flaw is.

I know I got a relatively long time out of it, but my original PS1 is still going strong as are any other electronics & PC's I purchased over the last 6 years.

You will yeah - when you get a new PS3, you can sign into your profile and download any games you bought with that account by going to account management>transaction management>download list.

Sorry to hear about your consoles guys , I have a 40 gig PS3 that is slowly dying on me. it's either not turning on ( it beeps then the red light keeps flashing ) or it turns on and will play a game fine, then other times it turns itself off when it goes to play a game ( either from the disk drive or the hard drive ).

Have a launch day 60 gig also and that is getting louder as time goes on , I'm expecting that bite the bullet at any time.

Mine packed in last night, yellow light of death now,it won't come on at all.

It shut down firstly then i got it back on said it was turned off wrongly with the message on the screen then got through that, then back into media watching and 2 minutes later the same thing.
Tried it this morning and the yellow light is now coming on and it won't power up at all, major pee'd off :mad::mad::mad::mad:.
Had it since the launch and it's the 60 gig.
I had an idea the day would come but i am still gutted.

console pros will fix that up for you ,they can also get a refurb if it cant be fixed ,i got mine fixed by another place 1st and it broke again ,so went to console pros he told me they had fried the chip.

i was thinking about getting a slim but after having the 60gb for so long
i realised its just too superior to the the slim .so got a 60gb refurb at a good price from console pros .

I did they hairdryer trick and it has been working fine the last 4 hours, got all the data backed up too.
I don't want to touch the seal as i intend on dropping it off with Sony soon.

Believe it or not it happened to me last night, I was shocked to see this thread this morning as of some massive coincidence. Backed it up a week ago on the external HDD for the first time out of pure jamminess as regards timing. Got a new internal HDD for it on Friday but didn't have the time to install it over the weekend. Really annoyed about the flashing red light and the initial yellow as it went strong for me since launch (60GB), think I might just purchase a new one despite sadly lacking in PS2 backwards compatibility, two USB ports and OS customisation. Oh well, just going to have to bite the bullet on that one.

Will more than likely offload the YLOD one I have here on Adverts, either as one whole thing or as parts, probably the former as the warranty seal is quite valuable to some people.

OS customisation? I thought that went long ago with the removal of the other os option?

that usually only stays working for so long ,also sony are not cheap to fix it and id say it wont last long after either ,they use a really crappy solder .

console pros can fix it for a better price than sony and give a 6 month warrenty .id say a better fix too .

Only if you did a system update. If you didn't update, you kept other os.

I'm going to give the hair dryer trick a go tonight and I might tweek around and see what I can do for it, need to get a game out of the drive first and foremost, if the HDD isn't kaput I might back it up again, upload all my trophy data onto PSN and mess around on it to see what the story is. I won't be doing it for a long term use anyway, just to get what I want from it and play for as long as I can until it fucks itself up again. I don't expect it to last the weekend.

My 60Gb launch day console went a few weeks back

€75 for consolepros to fix (no fix, no fee) and done in an afternoon, plus you get a 6 month warranty

Didnt need my harddrive and no issues with the disc that was stuck in it

So it's +1 for consolepros from me

Do you mind me asking what who you got that done with? I'm going to try and do some repairs myself but just in case.
