Changes to UK C'ships format

Changes to the format of the UK C'ships were announced today, matches up to the quarter finals will be a shorter best of 11 distance. I'm kind of disappointed to see this as I always thought the best of 17 format was great especially as it's the second biggest event on the calendar.

I just hope they don't tinker with the format of the Worlds now.

    Here's the press release:

The UK Championship in York will have a new format this year, with two tables at the venue and shorter matches up until the quarter-finals.

All matches in the qualifying rounds and up until the quarter-finals at the venue will be best of 11 frames, played in one session. As usual, the semi-finals will be best of 17 and the final best of 19.
    *
This has allowed us to play the whole of the venue stage on two tables, rather than four, which means that every match has the potential to be televised. Last year some excellent matches had to be played on non-televised tables, so now we are able to avoid that situation.
    *
Snooker's second biggest ranking event runs from December 3-11 and returns to the York Barbican, where it was staged from 2001 to 2006. John Higgins won the title last year by coming from 9-5 down to beat Mark Williams 10-9 in an incredible final.

Was there not talk a while ago about making changes to the worlds? I thought I was reading about qualifying and the finals themselves and making the shorter. Not dissimilar to what you're describing!

    No!
leave these tournaments with their long matches. Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater here Mr Hearn.

i agree with you zack. Hearn has done alot of good things for snooker, but he should not have allowed the uk format to change. it is tradition and if the worlds is changed it would be a DISGRACE. The current format has been in place since 1980 and everyone enjoys it. if it is changed to accomodate tv etc, it would be a catastrophe. the 17 days is folklore, whatever about the uk, the worlds should be left as it is. this year we had an incredible championship. if its not broke dont fix it
