Good runners for exercise

Wasn't fully sure whether to post this here or in the fitness forum so mods feel free to move if necessary :)

So, I'm finally taking the plunge to getting fit and losing some weight. Just wondering about the best runners I could get for working out? Planning on doing a zumba class once a week, and gym 2/3 times a week possibly doing some spin classes etc., so want them to provide my feet with good support, be breathable, comfortable etc. Any ideas?

Also, my boyfriend is joining me in my pursuit of fitness so suggestions of good men's runners are welcome too :)

I'm just out of college and work part time, so neither of us are rolling in cash so looking for a nice balance between quality and affordability!

    Thank you :)

Ascics runners are most certainly the best on the market. Never mind Nike or the like. I know they can be expensive but you can usually find them on sale.

I run in them and they give me great support, especially as I have a bad knee that can be made worse with running but ascics runners are great.

My brother plays professional rugby and he swears by them, that's the reason I wear them.

    Hope that helps! :)

Yeah, I swear by my Asics as well... they last for EVER and are particularly good for running, especially road-running which can be really bad on your knees if you're wearing the wrong shoes!

Splash out on them, they're well worth it. Just promise to never, ever, EVER wear them on any occasion which isn't exercising!

I agree with the above posters...You cant get better than Asics for any sort of exercise

Asics ftw! Bear in mind some models are specifically for running and support your ankle forward/backwards but not so much side to side (like a tennis runner say). I think their "walker" range has more side support.

I heard on the radio recently that Elverys sport shops do free fittings for runners for exercise and they assess the way you run and the way your foot falls in order to pick the shoe that suits you. They put you on a treadmill in the shop to see how you run! Runners tend to be differently shaped for people whose feet curve inwards/outwards when they run. Personally I have a pair of addidas ones that I love. Something with a really spongey sole are the best for comfort and bounce. :)

I wear Asics running shoes myself (Gel-Kayano 17 beause I overpronate like a mofo), but I wouldn't be so dismissive of other brands like that. Nike, Mizuno, Saucony, Brooks and Adidas all make some very good shoes and one of them might be what suits the OP.

Thank you for the replies! Seems to be a near consensus on the Asics. That's really interesting about Elvery's too Kimmy, must drop in there over the weekend! Thanks for the help :D Now to get myself fit!!

I agree with rainbow kirby that you shouldn't dismiss other brands outright. I sport a pair of Asics myself but the best thing you can do for yourself is to get gait analysis done (like other posters here Elverys is a good bet) and they'll suggest a range of runners to suit you. You might also want to think about what your goals are. For example depending on if you want to do long distance at some point or just the odd 5k, that might determine the shoe you'll end up getting.

Either way getting gait analysis done and having a chat with the sales assistant about your needs will get you the shoe you need.
