Copying files from laptop to PS3 - problem with router?

Not sure if this was a broadband issue or an issue with a setting on the playstation. Not sure if this is in the correct forum.

I have an 80GB 'fat' PS3. I used to have no problems in streaming from my laptop or in transferring files, previously, using my old router.

I recently changed ISP to Magnet. They gave me a new router.

There is a wireless network in the house.

After I changed ISP to Magnet, I noticed that copying files (movies, etc.) to my PS3 from my laptop was extremely slow. Download speeds from the internet to my laptop were normal. Download speeds from the internet to my PS3 were normal.

I don't live near any high voltage power lines.

I carried a system update on the PS3, but there was no change.

I uninstalled TVersity on my laptop and reinstalled it again. No change.

I assumed that there was some problem because of the new router that I got from Magnet. I rang them. They suggested that I could change the wireless channel on the PS3. I wasn't too sure what they meant, but I said I'd give it a shot.

Before I made any changes, I tried copying a file from the laptop to the PS3 last night. The file transfer speed was back to normal. The problem has completely resolved, seemingly without me doing anything.

Does anyone know how this problem might have happened in the first place, or how it might have resolved itself?

The problem hasn't resolved. It shows intermittently.

The internet works fine, but copying and streaming to the PS3 is hit and miss. Sometimes it works fine. Sometimes not.

I think that the problem is with the Telsey router. I've seen the following thread on Boards. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055962831&page=3 People mention ditching the Telsey router and going with another one.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix the problem?

Before the problems how good was the streaming to the PS3 using TVersity?

Before the problems, TVersity worked just fine. I believe that TVersity still works fine.

Well, since your using wireless, and the problem is intermittent I think magnet were on to something the first time..
It's most likely interference causing the file transfer to continuously retry, thus dropping perceived speeds, etc. Does your router report any retransmission stats for the wifi?

Since it worked with old router it could be one of 2 things
    1. Your new router is on a wireless channel that isn't 100% clear.. quite a few things can interfere with it - wireless keyboards/mice, bluetooth, microwaves, dect phones, wireless video senders... And of course, other networks. A good tip would be to locate and download netstumbler and walk from your PS3 to your router to your laptop. It will locate and gather info on all the wifi routers in your area. Wifi only has 3 real channels 1, 6 and 11. All the rest are overlapped. Any overlaps with other networks can cause slow downs.. Scan around and pick a channel that has the most surrounding channels free

    2. Your new router may not be as powerful. I'm not familiar with the magnet router, but take a look at the wireless settings and look to the power settings.. turn up the power if possible.

I also have issues with the magnet router - but I am using a Rukus booster so none of this works for me any more.

Since though you have noticed that occassionally it works fine then I think the advice about the wireless channel maybe correct - maybe follow the advice above and switch it in the settings of your router. Think this is all you need to do - it is probably set to Auto - so choose one of the other settings and change as testing dictates until you find a channel that is interfere free.

    Best of luck.

Thanks for the replies, lads. I'll try to give those suggestions a go as far as I can.

I have no idea how to check that. I am at the limit of my technical knowledge really, so that's not something that I know how to do. Although google usually finds me what I need to know eventually.

I'm definitely going to try your other suggestions though.
