Anyone have any inclinations as to which set work will come up? And what choice song / work?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭ohdechertig

If I had to guess, I'd pick Granuaile. It hasn't come up since 96.

I think I'm pretty much sorted, except for set and choice songs. GS, easy, just learn off a few paragraphs. Dictation I'm actually OK at. Triads and chords... :D Choice works, grand. Set works, need a bit of revision, but ho hum.

What is most likely to be for the essay??

If that's the general study you're referring to, usually the same thing every year or a slight variation.

One possibility is that they'll ask you to give a background to your general study. This could be by means of a review for a magazine or something, but the same information is always required.

The other possibility is that they'll ask you to point out two or three features common in your general study, and make a comment about them, referring to songs you have studied.

Pretty easy couple of marks if you learn of your notes.

Ok does any1 do backing chords? Something like imperfect cadence is at bar 4 and perfect is at 8.... Wdf do they mean?!!!

at the end there is always either a perfect or plagal cadence. you have to write your scale and label the chords I-VIII. Perfect cadence means it will go from chord V - I. Plagal goes from chord IV-I, you have to work out which one it is depending on the notes in the bar below it. sometimes there are other cadences in the piece, but not all the time. I don't really understand it, mostly i just make it up :)

anyone know what l'arlésienne means? and what suite means?

Chosen songs i would say are due up as if you look at previous set c's it goes Chosen songs, chosen songs, chosen works, chosen works, chosen songs - so i would guess chosen songs are up.

As for set works if you look back the two that are due are Granuaile (ripples in the rockpool) and L'arlesienne 2nd movement. DON'T BOTHER learning the spring four seasons both have come up recently so I would highly doubt they would come up

If anyone needs help with backing chords let me know as I was in the same situation for ages until it finally clicked!!

I THINK l'arlesienne means the woman from Arles and I'm almost sure suite is a piece of music written for a soloist with accompaniment from an orchestra:)

l'arsienne means the woman of arles
ok we need to know like 8 set songs in detail , for example preab san ol and caro mio ben
we also need to knopw 3 set works in detail, for example ripples in the rockpool
we need to know like 6 or 7 choice songs and works but you only need to know like 2 or three points about them so not much detail
you should look through your exam papers for choice songs and works q 5 :)

What is modal music and contrapuntal style??
contrapuntal style is when they combine the two main melodys , for example they do that in farandole, l'arsienne suite with the carol and farandole tune
and i thought a suite is a number of dance movements ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 68 ✭✭ohdechertig

A suite is a collection of dances or songs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 306 ✭✭chatterboxxx95

As previously said, contrapuntal is the combination of two main melodies, also known as counterpoint and it has a polyphonic texture
Suite is a collection of dances from the music of a play/performance etc.:D

p.s. if anyone knows can they please tell me why does the composer use changing time signatures in "Ripples in the Rockpools":o all we were told is that its a feature of modern music and then that came up in the mocks and i gt 0 for writing that!:(
    Help appreciated!:):D

The changing time signatures are used to emphasize the tension in Grace O'Malley's life. It gives the piece a more restless mood and doesn't let it settle, I think.

q5 a was good as i learned it off the rest was well i dont really no at this point
q6 triads were simple as usual i should get full marks
q7 was ok never really no with them tbh
q8 chords easy again full marks id say
q10 had it all learnt off so was great ecpect ful marks on this
so all in all i could be in line for an A if im lucky :)

yea, q3D was pretty rough, i'm slightly relieved that our yr wasnt the only one who had no idea!!
^whoever said michael flately and riverdance, class!!:L why couldnt i think of that!!:O:L:L:L I ended up bulls**ting on about sean nos singing even though i made no reference to a specific performance! so annoyed caus we didnt even do all the info about irish music properly, we were given a list of things we should be able to write about and told dt the info was in our book:/ ah well, whats done is done:rolleyes:

by the way, what did everyone get for the type of dance in 3a, i was confused whether it was a reel or a hornpipe:confused: and what type of band was playing for 3c, ceili, pipe or something else or something else?:D
    :L i swear i did so bad in q3!:/

was so annoyed by that paper in bits, I got an A in the mock and now I'm terrified i'm gonna drop down a grade because I messed up my practical too, i ended up singing with basically no voice as i had laryngitis a couple of days before it!:(

I said a jig but I always guess them:o I said mo ghile mear for 3d because its one of my chosen songs and then I just described pieces of sean nos singing:confused: For the last bit of q1 was it song 1,2 or3? I'm usually good at them but I couldn't get it!! I was between 1 and 2, chose 1 in the end. Oh, and who wrote Streets Of London??:)

Doesn't really, but you might get away with it, depends on the marking scheme, whether they go easy or mark it hard.

Rite,:L i wrote hornpipe but i circled thr reel rhythm pattern caud i was sure it was one of them and eiyher eay i get some marks!
Yeah, i really wasn't sure about that band because usually ceili bands hav a stronger bass line to help dancers keep the beat, anf i couldn't hear one in that so i wrote pipe band!:rolleyes:
