hi all, just bought an english reg car and have it booked in for vrt on monday, the problem is that the dealer seems unable to find the shipping details. i have bought the car in good faith, with a receipt from the dealer however if there is no shipping details for monday im unsure what the vrt crowd are going to say or do. i made a deposit on the car on the 11th and booked in straight in for vrt but like i said i dont have the shipping details :( anyone with experience on this issue ? im a first time buyer in terms of an english reg car and get the feeling somethings not right ?? any help would be gratefully appreciated

You need the full V5 cert from the car and a receipt, that is all.

So the irish dealer sold you a uk reg car without vrting or ncting it themselves. Sounds very professional.

    V5 form?

It's the UK Log book, without it you will be unable to VRT the car here for weeks or even months until you get the form from the DVLA in Swansea. If the dealer registered you as the new owner and sent the form back to the UK he made a balls of it, he is only supposed to send off the export section so the car is removed from the UK register.

Professional as in sarcasm. Chancers not vat registered dealing in cash not registering cars themselves to stay under the radar tax wise. Any warranty will be likely to be worthless, guys that snap up cheap diesel focuss and passats with questionable pasts in the uk and sell them on here.
I hope you're lucky and have done your homework with a history, finance and independent inspection
I hope you've verified the service history with the garages in the uk.

ok, what he's given me is reg papers and all that from the UK but theres an attached slip similar to a receipt implying im buying straight from the person... ok im not liking this 1 bit, he' promising me the shipping documents tomorrow but if i dont get them from him what can i do?? i have a completely seperate receipt from him saying how much i paid and so on, can i request a refund or for him to register the vehicle and me pay him the registration after that ?

The shipping documents are not worth anything and have no purpose in the sale, what probably is happening is the car is in the country for months and so VRT should have been payed previously. You need the car registered as being exported from the UK, otherwise the VIN number will still correspond to the UK plates and it will only cause problems later on. This dealer is clearly an amateur and should be avoided.

Sounds a bit fishy. Is the receipt forged, I.e for more than you're paying him for the car pre vrt?

Have you paid and how have you paid

If he is dodgy and the car turned out to be stolen, you would be f*cked and he would be in the clear with your cash as he will not be recorded in the sale if you declare to revenue that you brought it into the country last week.

no, the receipt states my deposit of x-amount and the remainder paid in full, the vrt was minused from the sale which is €1,400. lets say it was €8,800 minus 500 deposit i then paid him 6,900 cos i was vrt'ing the car..

hmm, should i just go to him in the morn and try back out of the deal ??

I imagine you shall be told to fuk off if it is just a guy doing it on his own and you paid in cash

At the very least insist that HE VRTs it.

Its illegal to sell an unregistered (in Ireland) vehicle to a private individual here.

    Poolsupporter,

I would ignore what is said by most of the people here, some guys are getting a little too excited.

If the deal is reasonable go with it, obviously you are buying the car off a small dealer and this is the way they operate (you do the VRT leg work yourself, strictly not to the letter of the law but the way it goes). A few things you can do if you are nervous is look at the V5 (log book) for the previous owners details (personally I prefer fleet cars from the UK, checking the mileage is easy a quick call to the manufacturer in the UK will confirm when and where it has been serviced etc. If you are nervous about history, finance, crashed etc have a check on http://www.hpicheck.com

The Irish second hand car market is flooded and so it is likely this car has been in the country a while and no dealer will give you evidence highlighting that.

Lastly if the car is rough, or too good a deal to believe turn on your heals and start walking. If you don't trust the seller don't buy the motor.

For the VRT don't forget Passport and evidence of address.

    Good luck.
