2011 Golf 12 Week Wait

My sister ordered a 3dr Golf 6 weeks ago, got a call last week to say it will be another 6 six weeks, that will bring it to the middle of July. What takes so long for a car to come from Germany?
She wants to change as she does a lot of mileage with work 65,000km a year.

Just looking for a bit of advice or recommendations for a new diesel car, 1.6TDI Seat Leon maybe

Well they broke their agreement they said it would take 6 weeks. Another six is a bit ridiculous. Not sure what the story is with the deposit to be honest

That's the normal wait isn't it? Was she promised a factory order in 6 weeks?

They didn't break any agreement. It boils down to production runs and the RHD KM/H market is much smaller than any other. Although I do agree 12 weeks is crazy.

There is nothing that can be done but wait. A dealer will never return the deposit.

I've never bought a new car so i didn't realise that, thanks for the heads up i'll break the news to her tomorrow.
She told the salesman that she does a lot of millage, he said as long as the trade in car doesn't go over 120K it will be grand it will be very close to it on 6 weeks

If the lead time was written on the simi docket then as far as I know there is a term written on the back of the form covering disputes.

If your sister had her heart set on a golf and has picked her favourite colour then 6 weeks isn't a long time. I often lost potential sales over being honest over lead times.

The garage may give a refund if pushed if golfs aren't available ex stock

Factor in their manufacturing plant's summer shut down. Normally 10 days or so.

Ah i'd say she might hang on, i think she was just a bit disappointed that she didn't have it by now.

The wait for certain VAG cars does seem to have become ridiculous alright though. Heard there last week if one wanted a Skoda Superb 1.6 TDi Greenline, they'd be waiting until 2012!

If she was promised the car in 6 weeks then AFAIK a specific build slot should have been reserved for her. My first thought is that the dealer messed up the original order. I'd ask for more details on exactly what happened.

Tell her to cancel it and buy an Alfa Giulietta instead.

She'll be lucky to see it in 12 weeks, more like up to 16 weeks at the minute.

VAG stuff is gone to sh1te. No stock around, and very few production slots available.

I wouldnt be too afraid of cancelling the order if the wait becomes too long, just make sure to get the deposit back. The dealer won't be too bothered unless the car has an odd spec, there's very scarce supply of Golf's at the minute so he'll sell it anyhow.

A friend was waiting 16 weeks for a Golf GT in 2007. Looks like things haven't changed.

Ordered 3 Golf BlueMotion 5drs on the 4th April. Scheduled to arrive 13th, 20th and 27th July - why they aren't coming together is a mystery!

Golf Ordered 25th March arrived in to the dealers this week (1.6tdi Comfortline 5dr) so I'll have it next week.

Ordered another Comfortline 5dr on Wednesday and that's estimated for the 15th August. Fingers crossed that it get produced before the plant shutdown, as it must be in for production last week in July. If that slips it could well be mid September before it arrives.

I collected a new Golf last week. Waited exactly 12 weeks for it, but I was told this upfront when I ordered it. A factory-ordered VW will take at least 10-12 weeks, and longer for certain models (e.g. the Polo is built in South Africa and the shipping takes much longer than the Golf from Germany).

The situation is actually a lot lot worse in the UK for some reason. There are people waiting 6-9 months for GTI's over there!

Ask her to ask the dealer for the commission number, and the car should be on the VW system with an allocated build week. Once that is set, then it shouldn't change. The car actually only takes a few hours to build once they start it... then factor in about 10 days for delivery to the dealers.

It may not be coming from Germany

Wow!....I didn't realize that the European market Polo's would come from there.

My mother bought one in Spain a couple of years ago, and seem to remember reading something about them being assembled there too

All Golfs (and passats I think) for the euro market are built in Germany. The Polo is in Spain, the Scirocco Portugal and the Jetta comes in from Mexico!

I ordered a superb estate in January and it took 10 weeks on the button, to the day the dealer promised at order ... as I was paying my deposit he was able to see the actual build week on the system and from there he could say three weeks to build, ship and clear the customs.

I have heard that I was lucky as in the Feb things went a bit mad on delivery dates for Skoda Ireland and UK ... 6 months or longer for some models.

Back in 2007 I had to wait 16 weeks for my GTI, was initally told 10 weeks on order but got a phone call after about 2 weeks to say the build week was pushed out .... those were the longest 6 weeks of my life!!

I ordered a Golf 1.6 TDI Highline the with DSG 1st week of Februrary and picked it up on 26th of April so that worked out just short of 12 weeks. though the dealer said it would have been a bit sooner if it had been a manual gearbox.

The importers only tend to keep in stock models that will sell quickly for them - so in the case of the Golf most people would want the 1.6 TDI in Trendline or else Comfortline spec and with a manual gearbox as well - yours would have been a factory order so they had to build it specially for you.

To me that is part of the appeal of buying a new car you get to buy it exactly the way YOU want it if you choose! If I was buying new I would always go for exactly the spec I want - a new car is expensive enough as it is without buying something that is not the engine and spec you want!

Unfortunately most Irish tend to be more interested in the the newness of the reg plate and the cost to tax it rather than the actual spec or quality of the car.

My old man was buying a new Peugeot last year and would only consider the basic spec with steel wheels and no bluetooth. A small % more would have got him a nice spec but he is typical of new car buyers.

By the way OP a 12 week waiting period is perfectly normal for a VW, Audi or BMW. Surely the dealer would have advised her of this when the deal was done.

It's not a Golf, but I've just got confirmation that the Passat I ordered the first week in April should be delivered the week of Sept 5th.

Apparently VAG are having issues with some of their models - particularly if you start adding options to it or are looking for a less frequently purchased model.

Well wear - got 2 of my 3 Golfs that were ordered the same time, today.

DSG models are still having issues, but Estate's that did get late year production dates have jumped right up the schedule. If it's a Passat Saloon, it shouldn't be taking that long.

I ordered a Passat 170 Highline on the 12th July and that arrived with me today. It wouldn't be a model that's ordered often, and this one is loaded up with options.

In my case it's a 4Motion Highline - but I did think it was a bit strange that it was taking so long given that originally I'd been quoted 10-12 weeks maximum

1.6TDI engine is in short supply across Europe due to component shortages still being experienced following Japan tsunami. Also demand across europe and world is still greater than supply which doesnt help.
