    Hey.

Has anyone else experience with zany calls or text messages when selling a car on DD?

I've had my ad up a few days, and no solid buyers yet, but some interesting calls and texts.

The best so far, I got a text message yesterday saying simply:

    "wud u swop 4 murk"

    Pretty typical really.

No doubt a murky murk though.

I love getting messages asking me very important details of my car, which are clearly marked in the ad.

A recent example is a BMW I have for sale, which is specifically marked as 3 litre and petrol with NCT indicated TWICE in the ad.

Text: Hi, is your BMW petrol or diesel? What size is the engine? Is there any NCT on it?

    I don't bother replying.

Reply with a random combination of letters and numbers made up to look like words.

I just love the "Whats your best price" texts.....
You have'nt seen the car but you wanna know the best price
I always reply to the text with a price increase of €500, that shuts em up

I really don't see whats wrong with those texts. They might just have a certain amount and was wondering are they way of the mark

I don't know why anyone would text instead of ring the number in an ad.

I prefer to deal with people who can be bothered to pick up the phone and ask some uselful questions and organise to look at the car before making an offer !!! I have NEVER sold a car through texting its a pure waste, and yes people are always way off the mark/bordering on rediculous

The only car I have ever sold started with a text. Quick text asking is the car still available. Where in Dublin are you located. Replied with yes & area. Within an hour car was gone.

Regarding txt vs phonecall, personally I don't mind texts as long as they're coherent. I understand that people are making shortlists and need all the info ready before the pounce.

I've sold 2 cars through texting. One guy sent me loads of texts and then rang next day saying that he's coming. He had even insurance already sorted before coming. Some people just prefer texts so I can't see much wrong with it.
I do hate "what's your best price" texts though.

i bought my last car after sending the seller a few texts first, turned out he was in work anyway so it suited him!

    Oh right....thanks

I have sent one done deal text. It was to a guy advertising a car with a sheet of paper carefully blocking number plate in all photos....good thing the plate number was clearly visible on the nct disc!
me: Interested in car, is plate 00 xx xxxx?
him: How did you know the number? Car is sold.

He took the add down, then re-advertised it days later without the nct disc photo. Penny must have dropped!

Call my thick but why do people hide their plates in ads?

I also sold my previous car through texts. However, while trying to sell the car I had numerous other texts from people who were just chancing their arm and obviously weren't really interested

Sold my last car through text, like that: Can I come visit now? Location? etc? Car sold in an hour.

    Texts like: "Offer €1000"

Sure the car sold for €2500

The reason why some people ask whats the rock bottom you'll take it pretty simple. Years ago people were buying cars privately by word of mouth so it was usually off the local guy down the road that they could just call down and have a look at the car. With the prominence of donedeal and Carzone people need to travel further. So if someone in Cork has a budget of €8k and they are interested in a car advertised at €8.5k then before they start travelling to Monaghan to look at the car they will see if the rock bottom price is, so as not to waste half a day driving to view a car thats beyond their budget. I can't understand why people don't get that.

I had a car on Carzone a while back, with loads of pics and all info including tax nct etc.
I genuinely had a guy text me asking what colour was the car and if it had an NCT.

This "what's your best price" nigerian talk via texts annoys me. Im not a big texter myself. I prefer to pick the phone up and make a call. It shows that you are serious.

Any car that i have sold i have got texts asking questions when the answer to any possible question that could be asked is in the add. I always make sure all of the information is in the add to stop people wasting my time with texts back and forth...

I hate texts myself, but I have sold cars to texters. I suppose it really depends on how fussy you're feeling..

Texting is ok I guess, but only in so far as it opens an avenue for conversation and a possible viewing.

I'd never even discuss "bottom line price" without the prospective buyer present in person. I'd just say "come and see the car, and we'll talk about that".

So you'd expect someone to drive half way around the country to discuss the price of a car with you?

    Fast?? It's a 15yr old 1.3ltr automatic!
    Economical??? See above!

Only kidding, it's not a bad looking car in fairness.

Yes I would. Or maybe I'd even go to them? Any car I've sold (lots btw) has been well priced, and there's always some wriggle room.

If a prospective buyer was serious about the car they wouldn't try to negotiate discount blindly either.

I told a guy a few years ago (after texts, emails etc. were exchanged) who had to travel "...make the trip. You will want the car as it's perfect and great value. If you don't buy I'll cover any travel costs". He travelled, bought the car with a small discount, and I gave him his train fare and a tank of petrol.

    It's called "qualifying a prospect".

I've had an enormous amount of panic texts asking silly questions...these are people that don't read the add but look at the price and proceed to waste your time asking all the q's that are answered on the add ! I've also stated on my adds (at the top) please read carefully before you ring and guess what.....they don't . I have on occasion been inclined to text back the timewaster telling them i sold the car for double what he/she offered just to make a point !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,449 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

I was selling a car once and i specified that i was only selling because i had a new car already.

Got literally about 10 texts going "wud u swap for...."

    RTFA....
