Damage to property

A few months ago I returned home one night and almost immediately heard two loud bangs. The whole apartment shook. It sounded like the guy below me had whacked his wall with a sledgehammer. He had been making noise like this on and off for months but never this bad. Then a few weeks ago I moved a sofa and there's a lovely crack running up the wall from the floor and branching out in opposite directions. What's the law on this? Can I sue the guy for damage to my wall? Or would this be impossible to prove? What should the management company do?

You need to establish what caused the crack, and that might require a building engineer to check it out. At the moment you're only surmising the guy below took a whack at the wall. What you're looking at may simply be a minor settlement crack, they're very common and unless you frequently check the wall behind the sofa it could have been there unnoticed for some time.
