just a quick enquiry really. is there an unwritten length of time a referee should stay on your c.v.?

i have been in my place of work for 3 years so i dont think they would really be relevant to my future job prospects.

also what is the recommended number of referrers for a c.v.?

    thanks in advance.

Who wouldn't be relevant? Your previous references? They would still be relevant because generally employers will want to hear from more than one person about your job performance. Where ever possible they will want your most recent employer and the one previous to that.

I think the number of references can depend on the sector, in social care at least two are needed, with more and more companies asking for three written references.

i think i could be out of luck there. my last boss didnt really like me that much or my approach to the job. oh well.

    dam.

on that note if it has been a long time (3 years in my case) since you asked the person could you use them as a referee, would you have to ask them again or remind them?

Maybe if your leaving your current job ask for a written reference, they'd wont risk say anything too negative and it might be enough for the next company just to have a letter. Worth a shot!

I think the polite thing to do is to remind them, or let them know you are looking for a job and they may be contacted. I didnt do that recently and it went very badly, the guy who was my referee had a falling out with a relative of mine, which i didnt know about cause i forgot to remind him about being a referee, and he gave me a crap reference  Obviously thats not likely to happen to everyone but if i had of asked it would have been a heads up :p:p

Can you get two different referees from within your current company? That might work. Or could you find someone else other than your boss in your previous company?

3 years isn't that long ago, so if your previous job is similar to your current one, then I'd say that they'd want a reference from the previous job.

Absolutely remind them - nobody is going to expect a call three years after they were asked!

I'd go further still, and tell them about the job I've applied for, and what I put down on my CV so they know what type of questions to expect. You might have emphasised certain areas of your experience that they may not remember.

Why on earth would you put references on your CV??
They are 3rd party private details and should only be "furnished upon request" to a would-be employer.

In this electronic era chances are your CV is out there all over the place with contact information of references for any wanker to see and hassle.
